Students can download and install various professional-grade Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools to help keep their architecture organized.
We highly encourage all students to try one or more of these tools in the capstone.
Catia Magic (formerly Cameo) is the most widely used MBSE tool in industry and is supported by JHU with an educational license.
Installation instructions are on this page.
Other open source or small-fee tools not found on the toolkit webpage include:
(Free with edu email. For SysML V2. Moderate learning curve. The most up-to-date MBSE language).
Installation instructions are on this page.
StarUML. (UML is free; SysML requires a small fee)
Modelio (free)
Capella (Professional grade; free, but does not capture/track requirements)
Innoslate (.edu use for free)
Gaphor (free)
Papyrus (free)
Astah (free)
UML Designer (free)
Students must take it upon themselves to learn the tool. Students cannot rely on their section instructor to teach them how to use these tools.
Some students do not plan on modeling in their real-world jobs or projects and typically opt to create the diagrams using a graphics diagramming tool instead. If this is you, there are several examples of tools built for diagramming for systems engineering. Some of these are free, and some offer .edu discounts:
PlantUML (Code-based much like SysML V2)
, and many more.
Note: There is no penalty in the Intro course (662) for using a diagramming tool instead of an MBSE tool; however there is a slight penalty for not using an MBSE tool for the Capstone (800) course.
