Simplicity is a key element in landscape photography. This includes fog, snow, low wind speed, leading lines and classic Peak District locations. These are essential for creating the best landscape photographs.
This is a well-known area of the Peak District National Park, specifically in the Matlock region. During our drive to this location, we were initially excited by the intense fog. As we ascended the hills the fog intensified further. The only downside was that the snow was not as spectacular as I had hoped. Despite photographing this location for many years in various conditions, I have never been fortunate enough to capture the snow. However, today could be the day.
This simple location offers exceptional landscape photography opportunities. Even in challenging conditions such as harsh summer sunlight and strong winds, the resulting images are compelling and worthwhile.
Initially, with the entire area to ourselves and no other vehicles parked along the layby, we were very excited. As a team of soul photographers, we were able to take our time and photograph compositions from one end to the other. However, another photographer arrived shortly after. This individual remained at the opposite end and we eventually identified them online. We had a friendly chat comparing our photographs. Paul and I carefully walked down the lane capturing images as we were pleased with each composition. As always, we were accompanied by our cocker spaniel who has become a good luck charm. She was happy to sniff around and sit comfortably with her coat on every time we moved to a new location with our tripods.

After capturing a few initial images, Paul directed me to step slightly to my left as Echo was positioned well for a potential photograph. The image shows myself in the centre, Echo to the left of my tripod and camera to the right. The composition of the snowy tree line creates a pleasing effect.
Snow lane
At this location, two compositions at Eva’s end of the lane offer exceptionally good imagery. This stunning site is accessible year-round and provides a simple yet effective photographic opportunity.

Tuning point
Before departing, I took the opportunity to photograph my favourite square in a series of crop shots. Square remains my preferred shape and the Fuji film system facilitates this process. The Fuji XT5 is a remarkable camera that simplifies my photography, particularly given my visual limitations. This is certainly the ideal choice for me.
