How can art be used to explore the complex interplay between human devotion and desire in tandem with religious thought and tradition? My religious background and thoughts about the concept of humanity provoked me into analyzing the relationship between humans intrinsic link to belief, & how our desires, beliefs, & behaviors are displayed through the rituals we follow, both through the method of prayer or communion, our difficulties with organized religion & the antithesis of desire & asceticism. In analyzing humans connection with both religion & love, we come to understand humanity better.
I combined traditional religious imagery & myth to modern representation of sexual desire, romantic attraction & want, while also mixing the use of traditional mediums such as egg tempera (which is new to me) with digital art. I also utilized traditional coloring & lighting techniques such as chiaroscuro and tenebrism in order to highlight the themes of my pieces (SI 12 & 13). I focused on human figures & semi-realism to juxtapose concepts of the unknown together with the base desires & simplicity of humans. The Imagery of bodily harm & corruption connects mortality & sacrifice to God.
