The listed ratings are given by the United States Chess Federation (USCF), the primary governing body of organized chess in the United States. The USCF rates players using the Elo system, named for Wisconsin chess player and physicist Arpad Elo. An average Elo rating in the USCF is approximately 1000, with beginners having ratings close to 100 and expert-level players having ratings around 2000. The USCF awards the title of National Master (NM) to players with ratings over 2200.
