K-12 Tournament Rules

Game Rules

  1. Points for games: Win = 1.0; Loss = 0, Draw = 0.5.

  2. No interference: When the game is in progress, no 3rd party is allowed to interfere in the game. Parents, spectators, TD, other players cannot interfere in game. No talking or disturbance.

  3. Game is between player and opponent ONLY. Please no interference from 3rd party during match.

  4. One Hand: Players to use only ONE hand to make moves, and hit CLOCK.

  5. Clock Use: Both players start play with same time on clock. Players think and make move first, then hit clock to STOP own TIME. Then TIME starts for opponent. Players to use same hand for CLOCK, and make MOVES.

  6. CLOCK FLAG: When player time expires, FLAG is raised on clock. Only PLAYER or OPPONENT can inform about FLAG fall. Player loses game (0.0) and Opponent gets win (1.0). No 3rd party, parents, spectators or TD to inform about FLAG FALL.

  7. Touch-move 1: If a player touches one of their own pieces then he must move that piece, if it is a legal move.

  8. Touch-Move 2: If a player touches a piece of that of the opponent, then capturing that piece is a must if it is possible.

  9. Touch-Move 3: If you let go of a piece, you have to leave it there.

  10. Touch-Move 4: Players who wish to touch a piece only to adjust it on the chessboard must first announce the intention, usually by saying “adjust”.

  11. Record chess moves: If moves not recorded and opponent can object and call TD. Player has to record chess moves and get up to date on own clock.

  12. Cell Phone/Electronic Use: 1st offense 5 min; 2nd offense 10 min; 3rd offense Forfeit game. Opponent to call TD. Clock STOP. Time added to opponent. Clock START and play continues.

  13. Illegal Move 1: Player to let TD know. 1st offense 2 min; 2nd offense 5 min; 3rd offense 10min. Opponent to call TD. Clock STOP. Time added to opponent. Clock START and play continues.

  14. Illegal Move 2: If illegal move noticed is Check to King (King under attack - even more than 10 moves back) - then players to call TD. Clock STOP. Game taken back to the last legal move before Check. Time penalty to player with illegal move. Clock START and play continues. Clock is not changed back. The players do not recover the time used after the illegal move.

  15. Illegal Move 3: If illegal move is over 10 moves back - then players to call TD. Clock STOP. Time penalty to player with illegal move. Clock START and play continues. But only if Illegal move is Check to King - then see previous rule IM 2.

  16. Sudden Death Time Pressure: When Time < 5 min for either player, no need to record chess moves.

  17. Byes 1: All byes to be requested before Rd 1.

  18. Byes 2: After taking bye and Rd 1 games start - if player wants to cancel bye and play that round; then player Win = 0.5; Loss = 0, Draw = 0.5. Player can only get maximum of 0.5 point in that round.

  19. Players to be competitive ONLY during GAME. Wish Opponent "Good Luck" before and "Well Played" or "Good Game" after game.
