CHEP LECTURE SERIES
Title: Open systems in QM, QFT and Holography
Speaker: Aranya Bhattacharya, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru.
Abstract and Outline: This will be a set of lectures on open quantum systems. I will start with basic quantum mechanics postulates and how to deal with systems coupled to an external bath. The larger part of the lectures will be on quantum mechanical systems. However, in the second (less than) half of the set of lectures, I shall talk about the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism and some recent developments in the field of open quantum field theories. Specific subtopics will be discussed depending on interest.
QM: Basics of pure and mixed states, density matrices, intro to open quantum systems, Markovian and non-Markovian evolution, Lindblad operators, quantum master equation, quantum Langevin equation, quantum channels, spin boson model for phase damping, KMS conditions. (4-5 lectures)
QFT and Holography: Open QFTs, Schwinger-Keldysh and Feynmann-Vernon, renormalization in open QFT. (3 lectures)
Miscellaneous: A few sub-topics depending on interest. a) PT symmetric systems b) Chaos in open quantum systems c) open QFT coupled to a holographic bath. (2-3 lectures)
Date and Time: Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2:30 pm, first meeting on 28th March 2023.
Venue: Meeting Room, CHEP.
