I'm Chen Shen, a graduate student coming from California StateUniversity, San Bernardino.
Before coming to the United States, I worked as an English Foreign Language (EFL) teacher in China for 10 years. I started my first master major TESOL in CSUSB in summer, 2019. Just after one semester, we encountered a pandemic. All in-personal classes shifted to virtual ones. Some of the classmates in TESOL program are American teachers. They shared with me that they were not ready for virtual online instruction and felt struggling with dealing with the technology generation. I could not help imaging how hard I taught the students if I didn’t adapt myself from traditional instruction in class to a virtual class which requests a teacher to equip with some skills on designing an excellent instruction plan with technology. Therefore, after graduating from TESOL, I continue to take my second master major Instruction Design & Technology (IDT)
Reflection
Although I don’t get a professional knowledge what technology is and how to make technology benefit to the learners and instructors both before signing up this program, I just realize that technology has been quietly immersed into our lives as the smartphone becomes more and more popular. My students know some English learning applications in memorizing vocabulary, correcting pronunciation, and improving grammar and reading skills. The children are technology generation and fast to learn everything. As an instructor, how to employ technology to innovate our instruction with data-driven insights, how to help a learner improve performance, and how to enhance learning experience, learning IDT will push me into a next career stage.
