Several Ph.D. student and postdoc openings are available in my group at Stevens Institute of Technology. We are looking for highly self-motivated candidates. Please contact Dr. Chen at cchen6 at stevens dot edu if you are interested and have expertise in the following areas:

1) Advanced numerical modeling and applications to fluid dynamics and simulation of fracture initiation and propagation, such as lattice Boltzmann method, pore network modeling, discrete element method, finite element, and finite volume.

2) Laboratory experimental expertise in unconventional rock characterization (e.g., shale), core flooding experiments, hydraulic fracturing, flow and transport in fractures, and geomechanical testing of various reservoir rocks.

3) Petroleum fluids and their phase behaviors under reservoir conditions.

4) Machine learning, deep learning, and applications to subsurface energy and environmental systems.

A Ph.D. student opening is available in my group. We are looking for a highly self-motivated candidate to work in advanced numerical simulation, granular geomechanics, single-/multiphase flow in fractured and porous media, and the applications to petroleum engineering and geological carbon storage. Candidates having expertise in machine learning and data analytics are also encouraged to apply for this position. Expected starting date is Aug 2020. Several PhD student openings are available in my group, with research focused on petroleum engineering. These positions are to support projects relevant to shale oil and gas recovery and geologic carbon storage. Expected starting date will be in Aug 2018 or Jan 2019. 1) Experimental position. Core flooding experiments for single-/multiphase fluid flow studies. Relative permeability and capillary pressure curve measurements. Core flooding flow experiments in unsaturated soils, especially ultralow-permeability soils such as clay.

2) Numerical modeling position. Lattice Boltzmann simulation of single-/multiphase fluid flows in 3D porous media. Molecular dynamics simulation.

3) Machine learning position. 3D X-ray CT image processing. Deep learning for image segmentation and object separation. Machine learning and data analysis.
