Reactions of Elements

A chemical reaction occurs when two elements combine. They form a bond together and form a new compound.

Look at the following compounds. Write down which elements they contain.

Create a table in Excel with the following 3 headings : Compound Name; Element names; Element 1 melting point; Element 2 melting point; Compound melting point.

Use the internet to find the melting points of the following compounds and their constituent elements and put the information into your table :

    1. Carbon dioxide
    2. Magnesium oxide
    3. Iron sulphide
    4. Hydrogen chloride
    5. Calcium oxide
    6. Boron hydride
    7. Titanium chloride
    8. Manganese bromide
    9. Sodium chloride
    10. Potassium iodide

Using an appropriate graphing method, produce a graph of your findings.

You might like to produce a separate graph for each element, comparing the melting points of the elements to their compound, or you might like to compare all the compounds and elements together…
