Introduction:
Chemistry being the subject, which is ever growing and continue to play an important role in quality of life better of all living beings a happier and merrier place to live. Realizing the importance of Chemistry the philanthropic management “Dandeli Education Society” introduced Chemistry as one of the major subjects at the UG level in the year 1974. The Department began its functioning in neighboring composite junior college building in the initial years. The department was established under the dynamic leadership of Dr. N. N. Sirmokadam with the increase in the strength of the students the department was shifted to the present premises and functioning efficiently.
Objectives:
Chemistry continues to be in the Frontline areas of Science stream, with advances made in the inter disciplinary areas like Biotechnology, Custom synthesis, Material Science, Nano technology, Pharmaceuticals and process development, in-depth knowledge is need of the day and to fulfill this objective, we the faculty of Chemistry has a job well drawn out for us, with this in mind we have well thought out objectives:
Introducing relevant changes in the syllabi as per the needs of the industry to prepare adequate man-power.
To train the students in qualitative tests of Water, soil and Food Products and other consumables as per the industrial specified procedures.
To train the students to take-up career in Research and Consultancy through experiential learning by involving in seminars, science exhibitions and participation in conferences and workshops.
To initiate in-plant training and industrial tours.
To take-up more research projects and consultancy activities.
Infrastructural facilities:
Chemistry department has spacious three laboratories with capacity of 25 students working independently in separate laboratories specified for Inorganic, Organic qualitative and quantitative experiments and a Physical Laboratory. There is a provision for preparation room, Balance room, an instrumentation room equipped with FT-IR and other important instruments and equipment’s and store room.
Achievements:
The department of Chemistry has the distinction of organizing the CHEM-FORUM convention twice successfully Chem-Forum is an academic body of chemistry teachers working in affiliated colleges of Karnataka University, Dharwad. The forum recently celebrated its silver jubilee in the month of February 2018 and instituted an award ”RASAYAN SHIKSHAK RATNA AWARD” as a part of silver jubilee celebration. The Department of Chemistry is proud that the former faculty Dr. H. Y. Merwade is the first recipient of this prestigious award.
The Department of Chemistry has the distinction of organizing a UGC Sponsored National Conference on Recent Trends in Drug Designing and a workshop on Curriculum development on select topics of Basic relevance like:
Stereo Chemistry
Electro Chemistry
NMR Spectroscopy and
Use of software in Chemistry teaching
The department of Chemistry has successfully completed
07 UGC Sponsored Minor Research projects
01 VGST sponsored major research project.
The infrastructure/equipment augmented through the research projects has made the laboratories well equipped with scope for research and collaborations.
Department of Chemistry is equipped with a FT-IR INSTRUMENT of Agilant make procured under VGST project a very rare to find such an equipment in an affiliated college laboratories.
Three former Faculties of the Chemistry Department have completed M.Phil.
The current HOD Dr. Sanjaykumar S. R. has completed his Ph.D. and Post-doc from South Korea.
With the encouragement of the management and capabilities of the faculties, the department has introduced a PG course M.Sc. in General Chemistry from the academic year 2014-15, however, which was later closed in 2020.
Our former faculty members of the department were actively involved in curriculum restructuring modifications and enrichment in theory and practical in chemistry in the capacity of BOS members. The faculties of the department have played a significant role in revision of syllabi in chemistry B.Sc. and BASc or BSc (pulp and paper science) courses.
The department has the distinction of organizing industrial tours / visits to premier Research Institutions viz., Central Water Research Development and Management (CWRDM), Indian Spices Research Institute, Kozikode, Kerala. Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), Centre for Cellular Microbiology (CCMB), Hyderabad. Paving the exposure to useful instruments HPLC, GC-MS, NMR, and Spectrophotometer.
15 papers have been published by our retired faculties in various reputed journals.
Current HOD Dr. Sanjaykumar S. R. has several research and academic credits which are listed in HOD biography page.
