In the "Humanizing Teaching and Learning" course, we learned different ways to be present in our course shells in order to create more meaningful human-centered learning experiences for our student. I learned that having a consistent online presence shows you care about the students, helps build community and increases students' motivation to log in to the course week after week.
In my courses, I have "humanized" in the following ways:
The value of humanizing is undeniable. Since I have begun to employ to these practices, I have witnessed greater levels of engagement, more connection among the students, and higher success rates overall.
To the right, you can see the welcome video from my homepage. The purpose of this video is to introduce myself the moment the students land in the course and provide them with some friendly direction. This video offers simple instructions on how to get started, and hopefully assuages their nerves at the beginning of the semester!
Here you can see a way I engage with my students in a more informal way through video postcards. I generally follow up with a question for them as well. I am always surprised at how many students respond in the comments. They want to know more about who is in the background, how my weekend was, what I did. And they often share about their lives. This proves to me that these snapshots of our personal lives make a world of difference. Students get to see us as real people, which helps them feel more connected in the course.
I really enjoy sharing what I'm doing in my free time and inviting students to do the same!
