The SWOT analysis below highlights my strengths and examines my weaknesses, reviewing areas for professional growth and development. Determining my strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats has helped me assess challenges and identify areas for improvement, which will aid my professional development in the museum.
Strengths
Based on my undergraduate degree in Archaeology and Art History, I have a strong background in object handling, documentation, and historical research, and have practical knowledge in curatorial work, community development, and education through internships at Fairfield Foundation and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art. Through the MAMS program and internships, I have developed strong and effective communication skills for public speaking. Collectively, these skills acquired through coursework and internships allow me to curate exhibits that are accessible, inclusive, and diverse, enabling all audiences to have meaningful experiences that contribute to the museum environment and foster community engagement. I am extremely passionate about creating museum spaces that foster inclusive, community–led narratives for marginalized groups. In my professional experience, I have had managerial and leadership roles. I also have a strong work ethic and am a firm believer that working hard will help you achieve your goals in life. My ability to balance creativity and critical thinking demonstrates that I am capable and adaptable, and that I can effectively work in numerous museum roles.
Weaknesses
As a person who struggles with anxiety, public speaking is an area in which I struggle the most. Although this has improved over the course of my internship at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art through co-facilitation with the Carter staff for after-school-care programs and coursework through the MAMS program. I also struggle with taking on too many responsibilities, which can leave me feeling overwhelmed. Yet over the last couple of years, this has changed, with credit toward the MAMS program through coursework on group projects and discussion boards, I have realized that it is okay to ask your peers and colleagues for help. Additionally, I have yet to secure a position at the museum, with experience limited to only academia, internships, and volunteering. I also acknowledge that not knowing a second language can be a hindrance; however, I am willing to learn new skills and languages to increase my employment opportunities.
Opportunities
This is an amazing time to join the museum field, especially with the advancement in technology, DEAI initiatives, and the creation of more visitor-centric environments. I also have a strong work ethic and experience in leadership and management, which I can apply to museum leadership and management. Through my internship, I enhanced my skills in collaborating with local communities, staff, and community outreach programs. My career goal is to become a curator at a historical site or art history museum. Therefore, furthering my education after MAMS through workshops, conferences, and the possibility of obtaining a PhD will keep me up-to-date with information and networking with other museum professionals. I am also interested in seeking mentorship from experienced professionals, which will help me navigate potential challenges and gain career insight in accomplishing this goal. Regarding employment opportunities, having already lived abroad, I am completely open to any career opportunities abroad or relocating to other cities across the United States if I were offered a position.
Threats
Working in the museum as a curator is competitive as these roles are extremely sought after, and experience and qualifications can vary depending on the location, which makes it difficult to apply for job positions. Even though I have a strong academic background and hands-on experience, I am concerned that this will not be enough to qualify amongst other individuals who may have more experience in the museum field. Therefore, it is vital to continually develop professional skills. Another threat is any issues with museum funding, as this could potentially cut programs and affect employment opportunities. Lastly, maintaining a good work-life balance can be challenging, as this requires clear boundaries to prevent burnout and to maintain a healthy relationship between work and home life.
