Applied to interpreting, this value means that the Deaf community has the right to full and equal access to communication and participation in society. I am passionate about connecting with Deaf people, their culture, and way of life. I am an interpreter that believes in life long learning and I know it takes effort to become my best. I strive to improve my ASL and interpreting skills everyday. My mom says, “Work will win when wishy washy wishing won’t.” I believe hard work beats talent when it comes to success. It’s important to work hard and smart. Making smart decisions comes by thinking things through and sometimes taking the long road. The Code of Professional Conduct guides my choices as I strive to maintain high-quality interpreting. I have learned that my ability to render a faithful message and convey the content and spirit of the original message is at the heart of interpreting. I can be trusted by my clients to do the right thing even (and especially) when no one is watching. I am courageous and show integrity when faced with challenging or compromising situations. I recognize and accept that l make mistakes and work to become my best despite my weaknesses.

Smart Professional Development Goals
Short Term Goal #1
"Maintain 3.0+ Grade Point Average"
Specific - Maintaining a 3.0+ grade point average is a specific requirement for continuation in the program.
Measurable - I will measure progress by turning in all assignments, completing my service hours, studying for tests and preparing well for projects and presentations.
Attainable - This goal is attainable through dedication and focus. I have been able to maintain a 3.0 grade point average in previous semesters.
Relevant - This goal is relevant because it is a requirement for the interpreting program. It is also relevant because it will improve my interpreting and prepare me for the Novice exam.
Timely - My timeline for this goal is when the semester ends and final grades are posted.
Short-term goal #2
"Find internship opportunities for blocks 1 and 2 that will allow me to grow as an interpreter"
Specific - In the interpreters training program, applying for an internship is required. My goal is to find an internship that will suit me best. Where I can grow as a person and interpreter.
Measurable - I will measure progress of this goal by taking the knowledge exam and passing it, getting my student permit, then applying for an internship at several locations.
Attainable - This goal is attainable because I am part of an ITP where they have a rigid schedule. They won't let any students fall behind. I will be able to attain this goal.
Relevant - This goal is relevant because it is a requirement for the interpreting program. It is also relevant because it will improve my interpreting faster then ever preparing me for the Novice exam.
Timely - My timeline for this goal is to have an internship picked out by the end of fall semester. I should have my student permit by then.
Long Term Goal #1
"Pass the Utah Novice Certification 2025"
Specific -I will pass the Utah Novice exam certification in 2025.
Measurable -I will measure this by working with with Deaf mentors and interpreting mentors to improve my skills on before taking the novice exam.
Attainable - This goal is attainable because I will graduate from the ITP/SLCC and gain experience interpreting during my internship. I'm confident I will gain the experience and knowledge I need to pass the novice exam.
Relevant - This goal is relevant because I will need to pass the novice certification in order to obtain my professional interpreting license in Utah.
Timely - My timeline for this goal is to work hard in my internship and gain all the experience I can to pass the novice in 2025.
Long Term Goal #2
"Begin my Bachelor's Degree through USU 2026"
Specific -I will begin my bachelor's degree through USU Spring semester 2026.
Measurable -I will measure this by applying for USU and registering for classes before the deadline.
Attainable - This goal is attainable because I will apply for financial aid that will reduce stress and make this opportunity possible.
Relevant - This goal is relevant because I will need to obtain my bachelor's degree to become nationally certified.
Timely - My timeline for this goal is to begin in January 2026 after I have passed the novice exam.
