Monday 20th January
Today I have started my proposal, I have started to write about my three main ideas these being to either make a documentary, a short film or a music video. I have simply written about why I would be interested in making each product and what I could make. I have also attached examples of similar products.
Tuesday 21st January
Today I have finished off my 3 ideas and have started to create a skills web. A skills web shows all the different skills that I may want to use when creating media products and seeing how confident I feel to using them. This can help my progression as I am able to look at skill swhich are placed lower in the web and be able to improve them over time. I have written up why I have placed each one where it is and what I would like to do to increase my confidence and experience in these skills.
Thursday 23rd January
Today now that I have outlined that I will be making a documentary I have came up with three ideas of what my documentary will be about and what it will feature. I have thought about what genres each documentary they would be and how I would make them.
Once I finished this I have began looking into any influences and inspiration I have to look at.
Monday 27th January
After reflecting on what I need to do and what I am doing I have started looking into my target audience as I have looked into more influences in my idea development. I have made a survey and sent it out amongst peers.
Tuesday 28th January
Today I have analyzed these survey findings and thought about what they may mean for my project.
Thursday 30th January
Today I have completed my top slice by using generative ai to create a song and lyrics. I edited this using premier pro to show this and have discussed my findings.
Friday 31st January
After completing my top slice I have moved onto looking into my primary and secondary research choices and the theories I will be using to back this understanding.
Monday 3rd February
Today I have started to write up about my final plan. This includes which I aim to make how I plan on making it, what factors will feature and what my aims are.
Tuesday 4th February
Today I have gone back into my project and created pen portraits. Pen portraits are used to make two fictional people who would like my project and explain why. This is done by looking into my target, primary and secondary audience.
I have also recived feedback from my supervisor today. Rob said that I should use more documentary techniques when I complete my action research to learn more about what my documentary will need to consist of and test what works and understand what I may need to work on. I was also told to add to my influences section of my proposal as it was missing information reflecting on cultural, social and political aspects of these inspirations and how they could benefit my documentary.
Thursday 6th February
Today I have gone out and filmed b roll footage an interview and a vox pop for my action research. In my top slice I wanted to ensure that I was actually about to do the subject of my documentary so in my action research I wanted to test documentary techniques.
Friday 7th February
Today I will be using Premiere Proto edit my b roll footage and interview voiceover.
Monday 10th February
In todays lesson, after completing my b - roll interview voiceover I have written up what went well, what I could improve on, what I want to do next etc.
Tuesday 11th February
The next thing I've done finish my proposal by discussing what role I want to focus on within the project and also looking into the timelines I will follow. As well as the timings and deadlines I aim to follow I will also be looking into the role I want to play and focus on in my documentary. As there is so much to cover I need to choose a role or two that are important for me to expand my experience and focus on what those roles will in tale.
Wednesday 12th February
Today is my proposal deadline. The last thing I have to do is update my inspirations and influences to make them more reflective on the cultural, social and political aspects of them. I will look at three participatory documentary's, think about the techniques they use and the codes and conventions that are seen in them and how I want to use them.
Monday 17th February
Today I have started my research by creating a research plan. This why I have used a graphic to suggest what tasks will be relevant to my research and what I will need to complete. After finishing my research plan I have made another graphic to prioritise my tasks to understand what I will need to focus on.
Monday 24th February
Today I have written up my findings and reasoning within my research plan, action plan and prioritising.
Tuesday 25th February
Today I have officially began my research by making two surveys - one for my primary audience and one for my secondary audience. I have sent both surveys around to relevant people and groups and also anyone who may just happen to be interested.
Whilst waiting for survey responses which may take time to receive, I have began looking into who I could interview and who may be of relevance to my documentary and subject choice.
Thursday 27th February
Today I have written out and sent an email to send to the secretary of state for the department of culture, media and sports as I acknowledge that this may take longer to gain response from her.
Friday 28th February
Today I have began my action research by looking into creating a motion graphic/logo for my opening sequence. I have found a YouTube tutorial for a after effects motion graphic which I liked the most and think it worked well as well as would benefit my documentary and the editing I complete.
Monday 3rd March
Today I will be finishing a quick write up on my findings and opinions formed from my motion graphic creation.
I will also be looking into sound and visuals seen within interviews in documentary's so that tomorrow for more action research I can take these codes and conventions and experiment with what works best.
Tuesday 4th March
Today I have continued to look into interview techniques and lighting seen within documentary's. After finishing this I have began my action research. I have looked at natural lighting, Rembrandt lighting and silhouette lighting. These are important to look into as I will need to choose what to use and when to choose it. After looking into these lighting techniques I have competed my action research.
For more action research I have completed a camera test, a microphone test, a lighting test and experimented with more interview/b - roll footage. I have completed this so that I am able to choose what equipment I will be using and what set up works well for interviews.
Thursday 6th March
Today I have began editing my action research. I am using premier pro. I want to clearly show the difference between camera and microphone quality.
Friday 7th March
Today I have finished my action research edit and have uploaded it to YouTube. Next I have began to write up about my findings. I have chose a camera and a microphone and shared why I have chose these items.
Monday 10th March
Today I have added screenshots of the results from both of my surveys and have began looking into results and writing about how this will affect and influence my documentary and the research I conduct for it.
Tuesday 11th March
Today I have began to look into articles about musicians feelings towards ai being used in music. I have found 4 main articles and have written up about my findings and have tried to learn more about varying factors of ai in music and music production.
Thursday 13th March
Todaay, after gaining as many survey responses as necessary I have began to write up my findings. I have written about how and why these findings will help my research further.
Friday 14th March
Today after finishing writing up my survey findings, I have began my action research. I have used google scholar to find any relevant study's surrounding ai and music.
Monday 17th March
Today I have gone back and completed existing product analysis. Whilst conducting my research I have been watching various participatory documentary's and have been forming opinions to what I like and what I may want in my documentary and how this will impact the audience.
Today I have also received feedback on my research so far. My supervisor, Rob said this:
"Research is showing strong work and previous feedback is being added and improved. Essentially I just need all elements now completed as what is there is very strong and developed work. Simply complete and begin filming as soon as possible."
Tuesday 18th March
Today I have found statistics in music production, artists and producers and the impact that ai may have on their jobs and the global market.
I have also completed my relevant pre production for tomorrows filming plan. This included a story board, a shot list, location recce, risk assessment and the release forms.
Thursday 20th March
Today I have conducted two interviews for my documentary, this is my first large section of filming for my documentary. These interviews were with a member of my primary audience - a young musician who is actively releasing music and a member of my secondary audience - someone who aspires to be a musician. As well as filming these interviews I have also been filming lots of b roll footage. Some of this b roll footage has included travelling to one of my interviews, filming my friend in here day to day life and different music décor and items around her house.
Friday 21th March
Begun my edit. I am using premier pro and am beginning my creating an opening sequence consisting of my footage filmed yesterday. I will be adding to this overtime whilst I gather more in my documentary.
Finalising on my written research I wrote up about my findings from my action research and where I was planning on filming my documentary.
Sunday 23rd March
After beginning my edit I was able to review the footage and b roll that I already had and what may be missing so today I have filmed additional b roll footage based on what I think would benefit my documentary. I have filmed more shots that show things such as ai and technology
Monday 24th / Tuesday 25th March
Over the course of these two days I have continued editing my documentary. I have focussed on cutting down the two interviews to the relevant questions and answers as they are both very long interviews.
Wednesday 26th March
Today I have filmed another interview. This is with the owner of a record shop. I think that this is a relevant interview as record shops would be affected by the changes and uses of generative ai in music. I have filmed lots of b - roll footage around the shop which includes the shelves with records on any signs with music themes, any quotes from artists, any books ect. I also made sure to get a release form.
After filming at the record shop I went home and filmed me creating the song using ai and any other relevant b - roll.
Thursday 27th March
Today I have continued on with editing my interviews specifically. I am still working on my interview as Jess. I have been editing it by cutting up each question and then debating weather in is relevant or not. This is where I have removed some questions and put others together. After finalising what question I will be using I have moved onto looking into what b - roll I could use to go with questions. Whilst I was at Jesses house I filmed b - roll of her on her day to day life and any music decor around hrer house. Some of this footage also included her playing the guitar, her writing songs and close ups from the interview.
Friday 28th March
Today I have finished off my interview with Jess and have moved onto editing my interview with Dean. I used the same process of cutting up the interview into the questions and answers that we had as this once again enabled me to decided what was needed and necessary.
Monday 31st April
Today I have continued on with editing my interview with Dean. As the raw footage from the interview was around 30 minutes and my documentary should be 8-10 minutes, I have found it to be quite time consuming. Today I have began deleting what questions are not relevant and what is not necessary. After doing this I have began to cut the answers as some of the answers are very long winded.
Tuesday 1st April
Today I have finished cutting the answers down and have began to add the b - roll footage. As Dean lives in New York I have had to simply screen record the interview and then use videos from Deans YouTube channel as b - roll footage.
Wednesday 2nd April
Today I have finished adding the b - roll to the interview with Dean and moved onto editng the interview with Rob. This was a much simpler edit than the one with Dean as it was quite short and straight forward. There were only a couple of questions which I felt the need to cut from my documentary and kept most in.
Thursday 3rd April
I have continued working on my interview with Rob from Revolution Records. Today I have began to work on adding my b - roll footage from the record shop. I also have had to work a little bit on the sound as at one point a lorry drove past outside the shop which was very loud. I have altered this by using the vocal enhancer and also de noise.
Friday 4th April
Today I have finished my interview at Revolution records and have began to work on the introduction to me creating my ai song. I have done a little introduction which uses statistics. I had realised when watching through my documentary that I had not used any statistics. Documentary's should be informative so I have found some statistics towards Udio and edited this section.
Easter Holidays
Thursday 24th April
Today I have continued on my edit. Today I have worked on way I could show the creation of the ai song. I found that the best way to show this was just by using me creating the song and me listening to it. As well as this I have also then added in my thoughts and feelings after making the song. I have then moved onto my final scene. This consists of voice over and b - roll.
Friday 25th April
Today I have began my evaluation as I have very little of my edit left and it would be quite productive whilst working at home. I have began my project concepts where I can discuss my goals and how I have met them.
Monday 28th April
Today I have continued to work on my final scene and b roll. I found that I had to record another voice over as the one that I had was not detailed enough for what I wanted it to be. This took some time as I needed to go back and look at what I had, think about what I wanted it to say and write it out.
Tuesday 29th April
Today I am aiming to finish my edit. I have worked on the new voice recording I recorded yesterday and covering this with b - roll. After I have finalised my documentary I have worked on my end credits. I wanted my end credits to be quite raw and simple as this is typically how they are on participatory documentary's on tv as I feel that they leave the audience thinking about the documentary and what they feel towards it.
After completely finishing the documentary I have watched through it twice and found any thing I need to change or adjust. Anything I found was just minor things like altering the audio gain, slight colour corrections, maybe speed or duration alteration, adding in introduction text for each person I interview ect.
Wednesday 30th April
Today after completing my edit I have updated my production log as I have not updated it in a few weeks. I have also then moved back onto my evaluation as this is one of the final things I need to add in.
Thursday 1st May - Day
Today I have looked at the feedback that my supervisor Rob gave me for my research and pre production. This was "In terms of the Research, I think you're good. The Pre-Production needs a write up showing why and how you are using them to construct your Documentary. This is a part of your Research but I know that will come along as you write-up the Production section, so that will come. "
Today I have gone back to my pre production as I put all of my documents on there but did not write them up. I have been writing up my location recces and what they mean. I have gone into detail about what the needs from the location are and what problems I may face. This is important to outline as I can come up with a plan to limit these risks and work around them.
Thursday 1st May - Evening
After finishing off my production document write up, the only things I had left to do were update my references and alphabetise them and complete my evaluation. Updating my references and alphabetising them only took a few minutes but my evaluation has took slightly longer as it is a large write up. Last week I had continued on from what I had already done on my evaluation which meant today I moved onto the project challenges and have overall finished my evaluation. Tomorrow I will get my final feedback.
