Objective:
Working with a partner, use SolidWorks to design the 4 internal components of the useless box. Your designs should clearly illustrate how each part moves or interacts with other parts, especially those that require mechanical motion.
I was responsible for the design of the motor and limit swith while my partner was responsible for the battery and toggle switch.
These images to the right display my design proccess of the DC Motor in SolidWorks. The part was created using measurements obtained with slide calipers while leaving some tolerance for some pieces that needed it. The overall base of the box was created then the circles and extrusions were added to include the important details of the box. (This motor powers the lever to turn on and off the box)
The limit switch was designed in solidworks using slide caliper measurements to obtain the proper measurements for the part. The switch is used in useless box to control the on and off functions of the motor turning the hook and motor combination off after the bottom of the hook presses down on the switch. The base of a cube was used to create circular extrusions and holes around the box like object creating the switch in solidworks. The two holes in the middle demonstrate the use and design for 2mm heat set inserts so that the switch can be attatched to the box in a elevated position.
One of the battery cases was created in SolidWorks using boss extrude features of a sketch to create one case since they are identical with the dimensions taken using a slide caliper as shown in the photographs to the right. A basic design of the battery cases was made to be inserted into an assembly of the useless box showing how and specifically where they would fit. (The batteries obviously fit into the case so that is why the cases were designed for the assembly)
The toggle switch is what sticks out the top of the box and activates the hook to start moving and pop out of the lid eventually hitting the switch to reverse the direction of the motor and cause the hook to go back down and turn itself off once it hit the limit switch. The switch and its corresponding nuts and washers used to hold it in place were designed in SolidWorks using features like the boss-extrude, dome, and extrude-cut feature to create the part according to measurements obtained by slide calipers.
