• Congress faced the electorate for the first time without Nehru.

• Results jolted Congress at both national and state level.

• The political stalwarts who lost in their constituencies included K. Kamraj in Tamil Nadu, S.K. Patil in Maharashtra, Atulya Ghosh in Bengal, K. B. Sahay in Bihar.

• The Congress lost in various states to name some are MP, West Bengal, Orissa, Madras, Bihar, Harayan , Punjab etc.

• The DMK won power after having led a massive anti hindi agitation by students against the central on the imposition of HINDI as the official language.
