Research Summary

My research group is working on advancing the control system technologies and their applications to various engineering systems, such as robotics, mechatronics, and industrial processes, with social impacts and public benefits. The current research focus is on developing new control and optimization frameworks for autonomous robotic vehicle (ARV) systems. The challenges and opportunites of incorporating advanced optimization techiniques (e.g., machine learning) into ARV control system design will be fully investigated. The developed new technology will be applied to enable interesting applications such as vision servoing, autonomous navigation, multi-robot cooperative control, etc.

Biography

Chao Shen has been working as an assistant professor in the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering at Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada since July 2021. His broad research interests include control theory, machine learning and optimization, and their applications in robotics systems, mechatronics systems, industrial processes, etc.

Before joining Carleton University, Dr. Shen was a postdoctoral researcher with the Real-time Adaptive Control Engineering Lab at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, USA. Before that, Dr. Shen was a research engineer with AltumView Systems Inc. working on the developement of intelligent computer vision systems and their integration into various robotics systems. Dr. Chao Shen obtained the Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Victoria, BC, Canada in 2018. He received M.A.Sc in Control Sciences & Engineering and B.Eng. degree in Automation Engineering from Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xi'an, Shaanxi, China in 2009 and 2012, respectively.

Dr. Shen was a recipient of NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada) Postdoctoral Fellowship and the winner of IEEE SMCS (Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society) Thesis Grant Award. He is an active reviewer for Automatica, IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics, IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology, IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics, IEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering, Ocean Engineering, etc.
