Updates to the Online Desmos Virginia Calculators for the 2019-2020 School Year – NEW!

As indicated in Superintendent's Memo #236-19, released on September 27, 2019, in preparation for the 2019-2020 SOL test administrations, the Desmos Virginia Scientific Calculator and the Desmos Virginia Graphing Calculator have been updated to include some additional features. No updates are being made to the Desmos Virginia Four-Function Calculator. No further updates to any of the Desmos Virginia Calculators are anticipated until after the summer 2020 SOL test administration.

Accessibility improvements were made to both the Desmos Virginia Scientific and Graphing Calculators.

Some of the new features available are highlighted below:

  • Zoom Fit – a magnifying glass icon appears in the Desmos Virginia Graphing Calculator at the bottom left when entering a table of values. Click the magnifying glass for the associated graph to change size.

  • Decimal to Fraction Capability – in the Desmos Virginia Graphing Calculator, click the stacked fraction icon to convert a decimal to a fraction (note: this feature will not be available in the Desmos Virginia Scientific Calculator).

  • Statistics Functions – in the Desmos Virginia Graphing Calculator, additional statistical commands can be found under the Distribution functions, including histogram, dotplot, boxplot, and normal distribution. The normaldist feature includes “Find CDF” where using a maximum and minimum generates the area under the curve.

  • Edit List Menu – the edit list menu in the Desmos Virginia Graphing Calculator is now keyboard accessible and can be used without a mouse.

  • Contrast Changes – expression evaluations in the Desmos Virginia Graphing Calculator are a higher contrast to comply with the more stringent WCAG 2.1 standards.

  • Shortcuts – new shortcuts have now been added.

    • Users may now type “cbrt” as a shortcut for cube root in the Desmos Virginia Scientific and Graphing Calculators. Functionally, this is identical to typing “nthroot” and then “3.”

    • Users may now type “table” as a shortcut for creating a table in the Desmos Virginia Graphing Calculator.

The Desmos Virginia Calculators are free to use, and beginning in fall 2019, they will be available from app stores which will allow students to access a specific Desmos Virginia Calculator without having an internet connection. Information regarding how to access the Desmos Virginia Calculators via the app stores will be forthcoming to school divisions.

For additional information on how the Desmos Virginia Calculators differ from the Standard Desmos Calculators view the Desmos Virginia Information document.
