Atmospheric Dynamics & Extreme Weather (ADEW) Group
Welcome to the ADEW research group!
I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Previously, I worked with Prof. Yi Ming and Prof. Seok-Woo Son.
My group seeks to understand how atmospheric circulations interact across scales to shape extratropical weather and climate. We combine theory, analysis of reanalysis and model output, and idealized modeling to understand and isolate the key physical mechanisms governing weather and climate systems.

August 13, 2026: Yeeun Kwon, a PhD student at Seoul National University, is visiting my group. She will work with me intensely on the energetics of explosively deepening cyclones. Welcome to Fairbanks!
June 12, 2026: A paper, "Hysteresis in Global Atmospheric River Activity under Carbon Dioxide Removal" for which I served as corresponding author, is available in npj Climate and Atmospheric Sciences. It was a pleasure to mentor Seohyun Chung!
June 8, 2026: The ADEW group has officially launched.

I am actively recruiting one M.S. or Ph.D. student to join the ADEW Group beginning in Fall 2027. Students interested in extreme weather, synoptic meteorology, large-scale atmospheric dynamics, or bridging weather and climate are encouraged to contact Prof. Chanil Park (cpark15@alaska.edu), particularly those with a foundation in atmospheric sciences, mathematics, or physics.
