The maker movement is often uttered in the same breath as STEM, but the world of making isn't relegated to the Island of STEM. In fact, I argue that making has its place across disciplines and can create opportunities for cross-discipline learning and collaborations. I was thrilled to stumble upon this series that brings the world of making into a writing curriculum, especially because I work closely with our University Writing Center which resides inside of the Libraries at Texas A&M.
This easy to use book follows the recipe of the Hack Learning Series which includes:
Although this book is geared towards working with younger writers, Stockman makes a strong case for the power of making in the writing world which easily inspires ideas for ways to make this happen regardless of the age of the writers. Stockman not only provides a myriad of ideas to motivate readers into action, but she also makes the ideas real by talking about what they have looked like in the real world.
Stockman explains that "Whether I'm working with makers who use words to enrich their experiences or writers who benefit from taking a maker's approach, one thing is very clear: When writing is treated as a physical endeavor, it becomes more accessible to anyone"(Location 123).
There are also several helpful illustrative photos and diagrams that act as powerful tools of understanding the methods presented.
Stockman invites the reader to include their voices in the conversation by using the hashtag #makewriting and to reach out to her through her Twitter: @angelastockman.
I am excited to explore ideas presented within the pages of Make Writing within the context of my reality. My gears are turning and I see how strategies could be used in a creative writing residency here at Texas A&M. If you are trying to engage with writers in a more meaningful way, Make Writing shares lots of gems that can make a huge impact in the way you work with writers.
