OKX is a centralized crypto exchange headquartered in Seychelles (yeah, those beaches really do look amazing). Because it's not based in the US, you'll find features that most American exchanges don't offer—futures, margin trading, crypto options, perpetuals, and swaps.
The catch? If you're in the US or Canada, you can't use it. Your IP address will politely inform you that proof of residence elsewhere is required. But hey, regulations are regulations. Binance faces the same issue, which is why they run Binance.com for the world and Binance.US for Americans. The OK Group does something similar with okcoin.com for US traders who want spot trading.
For everyone else on the planet, though, OKX is fair game.
Centralized exchanges like OKX have actual humans running the show behind the scenes. Decentralized exchanges like Uniswap or GMX run on community votes and code. OKX blurs those lines by offering features you'd typically find on DEXs—like perpetual swaps. The result? You don't have to hop around different platforms. OKX bundles it all together.
Spot trades: Buy and sell over 340 cryptocurrencies
Demo trading: Test strategies without risking real money (free account required)
DeFi wallet: Connect to web3 projects across 29 blockchains via Chrome extension or mobile app
Futures, perpetuals, and options: Three ways to bet on future crypto prices with up to 125x leverage
Margin trading: Trade six pairs with up to 10x leverage
Trading bots: Clone existing bots or build your own for automated profits (or losses—watch out)
Copy trading: Mirror profitable traders with one click
Mobile app: Trade anywhere with cell service
I strapped on my explorer hat and dug into OKX.
The short version: Active traders will probably love the platform and appreciate the low fees—up to 75% cheaper than Coinbase Advanced. Beginners will need patience. There are tons of features buried in menus, which can feel overwhelming at first. But once you figure out where everything lives, it's worth the learning curve.
OKX offers demo mode, which I appreciated as someone new to the exchange (and someone who's lost money on leveraged trades before). Cool—I can lose money without actually losing money.
In fact, my demo account is rolling in virtual crypto right now.
You get a nice mix of virtual assets to experiment with, and demo trading covers:
Spot trades
Perpetual swaps
Futures trading
Options
Margin trading
Custom trading bots
The bots caught my eye. I named mine Spot and set it up to fetch Dogecoin profits. Bots can go long or short. More on that shortly.
If you're a buy-and-hold person or prefer keeping things simple, OKX handles that too. Spot trading in crypto means the same as in stocks—immediate delivery. You pay for it, you own it.
OKX displays a default list of tradable cryptos, but there are way more available. I searched for Tron (TRX) and found trading pairs instantly (TRX/USDT and TRX/BTC). Simple. OKX also has XRP, another tough-to-find crypto elsewhere.
All the standard order types work here—you can trade with sniper precision:
Limit orders: Set exact buy and sell prices
Market orders: Buy or sell immediately at current prices
Stop orders: Take profit and stop loss orders protect trades by closing at your defined price. Trailing stops let you ride profits while protecting downside

If you're serious about maximizing your trading efficiency, OKX provides the precision tools you need without the bloated fees found on mainstream platforms.
Trading on OKX is cheap. Really cheap. And you don't need whale-sized trades to save money. As your 30-day trading volume increases, fees drop even lower. Good news: Perpetual and futures trades count toward that volume, bumping up your numbers quickly.
Note: Bots trade like terminators hunting targets, so fees can accumulate fast.
OKX gives traders two ways to automate. First up: trading bots. These digital workers handle almost everything except making sandwiches. The cool part? OKX backtests ready-to-use bots, so you see real-world performance based on historical prices. Or you can build your own bot with custom parameters—good luck, mad scientist.
I set up a bot to dollar-cost average Bitcoin. Pre-built bots range from conservative to aggressive. I chose a "moderate" bot with a backtested annual yield around 180%, which beats my usual performance. Go get 'em, Bitcoin bot.
To be thorough, I let my other bot (Spot the Dogecoin bot) run over the weekend. Spot stumbled at first but then brought home the bacon. Good boy—fetch dad more profits.
The second automation method is copy trading, which does exactly what it sounds like—copy other traders' moves on OKX.
This comes with caveats:
You can only allocate $1,500 to copy trading. Bots have no such limit
You wait for the trader you're following to make their next move, which might never happen. Your funds could sit idle
The trader might make a losing move. You're placing serious trust in someone who might be drunk during their next trade. Bots never drink and never get emotional
Copy trading sounds neat in theory, but bots win for me. Clone a backtested bot or create your own and start trading immediately.
What if you could bet more money than you actually have on Bitcoin's future price? OKX's perpetual swaps let you do exactly that.
When I started this review, Bitcoin was tumbling because a bank failed. The market reaction looked overdone, so I opened a leveraged long position on Bitcoin using perpetual swaps.
A perpetual swap is a bet on future price that doesn't require taking delivery of the asset. In Vegas, you can bet on red without hauling the roulette wheel to your car. Same concept.
OKX encouraged me to share my perpetual swaps trade with friends. That's you, friends.
But the OKX perpetuals experience is stellar. Setting up a perpetual trade is super easy from the same page as spot trades—just click the perpetuals tab. You can choose up to 125x leverage (probably unwise). At 125x, a butterfly landing on the Bitcoin chart would liquidate your position. Leverage amplifies both profits and losses.
Or choose safer leverage, like my 5x position. Lower leverage means your position survives longer. Mine's getting wiped out slowly, which I prefer to instantly. There's still hope. Bitcoin would have to drop to around $4k to liquidate my position.
This brings up funding fees.
Like other perpetual platforms, OKX charges a funding fee for betting more than you have. The structure resembles dYdX. Short and long traders pay fees to traders on the opposite side. Funding rate formulas look like forgotten algebra, but just know there's a cost to holding trades longer.
Over time, funding fees eat your margin (collateral) and push you toward liquidation—when the exchange sells your collateral to close some or all of your trade. Ouch.
OKX also offers futures trading (also up to 125x leverage). The difference: futures have expiration dates and require delivery. Perpetuals are synthetic versions and can stay open as long as you have enough collateral backing the trade.
The "Grow" menu is where you hunt for yield—staking, lending, borrowing, and a mysterious DeFi category. I passed on the APE token deal. If you connect your wallet to OKX or use the OKX crypto wallet, you access additional DeFi opportunities for earning yield from liquidity pools. Watch out for impermanent loss.
Staking is probably the safest "Grow" option, but higher yields require longer commitments (up to 120 days). There are only a handful of tokens with staking deals, on par with Coinbase.
OKX does offer liquid ETH staking using a strategy similar to Lido—deposit ETH and receive an equivalent token called BETH.
So far, OKX's strength is clearly in trading tools. This platform is really good for trading.
People who want to trade futures and perpetuals: OKX is one of few places where you can trade crypto futures and perpetuals together
People who want automated trading: Trading bots are a standout feature. Customize your bot or unplug it anytime if things go sideways
Advanced traders: OKX is a trader's platform. Other exchanges prioritize user-friendliness. OKX doesn't quite nail that but offers more powerful trading tools than Coinbase or similar platforms
US or Canada residents: Seriously, you can't even deposit crypto. Don't blame OKX—write your congressperson. US regulations keep powerful platforms like OKX out of reach
Newbies: OKX can intimidate newer traders. However, demo trading lets beginners learn with zero risk and lets all traders test strategies against live market prices
People wanting extensive staking options: At press time, there were six staking options. That's it. While staking yields run high in some cases, you'll lock up crypto longer than protocols themselves require to earn those higher yields
Every exchange targets a specific market. OKX caters to trading enthusiasts—bots, perpetuals, yeah, nerd stuff. I enjoyed it thoroughly. Other exchanges target newer traders or broader markets.
Coinbase is the first stop for millions entering crypto. The exchange is easy to use, and Coinbase Advanced helps counter its reputation for high fees (though the quick-buy box remains expensive).
OKX rocks as a trading platform. Leverage, futures, perpetuals, hard-to-find cryptos, trading bots—this exchange excels at all those things. But with great power comes great difficulty finding features hidden in menus and tucked behind checkboxes. This isn't for beginners, but it challenges you to learn and provides a demo trading account to get started safely.
Overall, OKX delivered a great experience, and Spot the trading bot did a fabulous job fetching profits. Good boy, Spot.
