As professional educators and English teachers, we share much in common, and there is significant overlap in our curricula, educational training, and experiences in the classroom. The goal of this program is that high school and college faculty work together as a team to help students achieve the skills they will need to successfully meet the requirements of English 1A, while also meeting the required outcomes of ERWC. Teaching pairs should work together to determine their schedule and lesson plans, confer to determine who will lead which classroom activities and when, and to determine how grading will occur. While the English 1A professor is the instructor of record, both faculty will play key roles in determining and conducting day-to-day activities.
Chaffey College faculty were sent tools to record their own and their students attendance. You are responsible for recording your students' attendance for each day you (the Chaffey College instructor) attend the course on this spreadsheet tool. We will discuss this procedure in training. This method of attendance tracking is required for all program sections (team-taught and sole-instructor).
For sole-instructors: You'll record attendance for the college on 3 of the 5 days you meet with your students. The other two days will not be considered college class time by Chaffey.
For team-teaching partners: The Chaffey College English faculty member will attend three of the five weekly class meetings. During the sessions that the Chaffey College faculty member is present, it may be appropriate for them lead activities or discussions; individual teams are encouraged to find a flow that works for them. For all faculty teams, planning and careful structure of the course schedule and daily lesson plans will be essential to the success of the course and our students.
A major component of the English 1A Course Outline of Record, in conformity with the CalGETC standards, are the four major essays required for English 1A. For this reason, the grading of the major essays should be the primary responsibility of the Chaffey College faculty member. This does not preclude individual partnerships from collaborating in the grading of these assignments if they so choose.
The grading for all other assignments for the course can be divided or shared between high school and English faculty in an equitable way that meets the needs of both faculty members and their students.
All disciplinary issues outside of matters of academic integrity will be the purview of the high school team and high school policies. For matters of academic integrity, the Chaffey English Department and Chaffey College academic integrity guidelines as spelled out in the Chaffey Student Handbook will guide faculty in setting policies and addressing any disciplinary issues regarding academic integrity, including submission of incident reports. More information on Chaffey English Department policies can be found on the Teaching Resources page of this handbook.
The English Department has embraced emerging generative AI as a tool that can aid but never replace students as writers and thinkers. One of our goals as English instructors is to help students become AI-literate. Please review our department guidelines regarding the use of AI. Chaffey College has also provided faculty with an evolving AI resource page on Canvas. And our Library has created an AI resource for students.
The English 1A Course Outline of Record (COR) requires students to complete three supplemental activities via our campus Success Centers. The Success Center requirement should be worth no less than 5% of the student's overall grade in English 1A. This requirement is highly correlated to improved student success and performance in English 1A. While the CJUHSD Canvas LMS platform will continue to be the primary means of instruction support for the Spring 25 semester as well as the 25-26 school year, in Year 2 and Year 3 of the Pilot, our students will be able to access the online Chaffey College Success Center, including required supplemental activities via the Chaffey College Canvas LMS platform.
Additionally, Success Center English tutors will be embedded in classes at three of our campus sites (Etiwanda, Montclair, and Ontario). These tutors can also help students complete these activities. During our November 1 Training in Fall '24, we will walk all faculty through the process for having students sign onto and complete the Success Center requirements. Having students complete their Success Center requirements on days when the Chaffey College faculty member is not present may be a good best practice.
