Unit 4 - Visual Literacy

Assignment

For this visual literacy course I was able to have a chance to learn about how visual literacy is important for students, gain an understanding of important design principles to think about when creating lessons that promote visual literacy and finally have a chance to practice with some tools that make it possible to bring visual learning opportunities into my classroom. For my final project I created an infographic explaining the steps to solve a word problem that students should use throughout the 3rd grade school year.

Reflection

How Visual Literacy fits in with Global Collaboration, Project Based Learning and Flipped Learning:

Through this course I have gained a stronger understanding of what visual literacy. With this knowledge I’ve gained I can be more purposeful with the images I create to share with and help my students learn. I also can bring images into my teaching to support ideas I’ve already gotten from this cohort. Using images to teach students as part of flipped learning assignments or allowing students to create their own images as a product in PBL seem like nature fits to bring elements of design into these areas.

How Visual Literacy will help enhance learning in my classroom:

Using more images will help me to give students visual representation to help understand learning goals in my classroom. Incorporating purposeful imagery and also teaching students how to think about and analyze these images is essential for them to have success comprehending the numerous images they process each day. Finally I see some specific applications to standards I teach in teaching students about point of view, making inferences, and using text features when reading.
