This workshop is organized by the members of the Research Project Argument Structure and Neurolinguistic Processing at the Lexicon-Syntax Interface: Unergative Verbs with Cognate Object or Obligatory Prepositional Object of the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (FFI2016-80142-P) (Isabel Oltra-Massuet, Linnaea Stockall, Alec Marantz, Jordi Ginebra, Elga Cremades, Anna Maria Montserrat, Mariángeles Cano Cambronero, Andreu Castell), with the help of the CGG28 organizing committee.

Our project focuses on the theoretical representation and linguistic processing of unergative verbs. It seeks to analyze the various structures in which unergative verbs can appear and how they contrast with other parallel structures such as light verb configurations from both a theoretical and an experimental point of view.

The main goal of this 1-day workshop is to bring together researchers working on the representation and processing of verbal argument structure in the languages of the world from a cross-linguistic perspective that combine theory-based and experiment-focused research. We aim at building a productive dialog among researchers working on verbal argument structure from an interdisciplinary perspective that includes the psycholinguistic, neurolinguistic and theoretical methods and tools. We are especially interested in research that deals with:

(i) the analysis of unergative verbs with cognate objects and obligatory PP objects,

(ii) the relationship between unergative verbs and other configurations like light verbs that have received less attention in theoretical linguistics and are understudied experimentally,

(iii) the appearance of verbs in multiple argument frame options and how this affects the processing of argument structure,

(iv) the distinction between lexical and structural information with respect to the relation between a verb and its arguments, both on the basis of single-word-level tasks and at the level of the sentence,

(v) the representation and processing of argument structure both in adults and children, thus including the language acquisition perspective,

(vi) sentence processing, prediction and planning in argument structure.

This one-day workshop on argument structure will be followed by the 28th Colloquium on Generative Grammar on May 31 – June 1, 2018, which features the following invited speakers:

We intend to publish a special journal issue of selected papers from the ARS-LING workshop.

Submission guidelines

Researchers working on the representation and processing of verbal argument structure are invited to participate as poster presenters. There are also two open slots for oral presentations, to be selected from among the highest-rated abstracts. Please state in your abstract whether you wish to be considered for oral presentation. Oral presentations will be allotted 30 minutes plus 10 minutes for discussion.

Authors are asked to submit their abstracts in an anonymous PDF file to the following site:
