The Sacramento at Risk: Understanding Floods in California ESRI Story Map takes you on journey through California's variable flood conditions and Sacramento's flood history. Learn more about your flood risk, mapping your flood risk, and more resources to be prepared.


MyHazards is a tool for the general public to discover hazards in their area (earthquake, flood, fire, and tsunami) and learn steps to reduce personal risk. Using the MyHazards tool, users may enter an address, city, zip code, or may select a location from a map. The map targets the location, and allows users to zoom and scroll to their desired view. The screen then presents information on the risks identified within the search radius, and recommended actions. MyHazards website performs best when using Internet Explorer. Hazard Data is approximate and data layer visibility are subject to the extent of the Map.

Ventura County Public Works developed this Homeowners Guide for Flood, Debris, and Erosion Control as a tool for the general public to plan for storms on their property. This guide educates homeowners on principals for controlling debris flows, window and door protection, building deflectors for mud and debris, using sandbags to protect your home, and more!

This year PG&E got approval from the California Public Utilities Commission to put into effect is Public Safety Power Shutdown Program. Part 1 is an overview of the program and how it might affect you. Return soon for Part 2 which tells us about Delta communities and how well prepared they are for power shutdowns. Return soon for Part Three, which will address the problems faced by those at risk and those in need — the people who do not have the means to travel or may not have enough money to leave the area or stockpile food, and those with medical needs.

These videos provide an in depth look at how emergency evacuations are proclaimed and carried out with focus on terminology and how different counties handle emergencies. These two videos address four questions that continue to be asked by citizens, elected officials, and government personnel who may have a responsibilities during an evacuation.

The 7-minute Basic story gives a short response to each question. The 11-minute Extended story explores each question in depth and provides reference documents and mapping advances.

The four questions addressed are:

  • Who has the legal authority to order an evacuation, what rights or responsibilities do citizens have regarding whether to leave?
  • Who can implement an evacuation order?
  • How will communities be alerted?
  • What routes to take out of hazard areas?
