The 2023 joint CFMIP-GASS Meeting on Cloud, Precipitation, Circulation & Climate Sensitivity
Sorbonne University - Paris, France
July 9-13, 2023
This joint CFMIP-GASS meeting will focus on themes relevant to Clouds, Convection, Circulation, and Climate Sensitivity, and will strengthen collaborations between ongoing Cloud Feedback Model Intercomparison Project (CFMIP) and Global Energy and Water Exchanges (GEWEX)'s Global Atmospheric System Studies (GASS) activities.
The meeting will consist of oral presentations, poster sessions and breakout groups on the topics listed below, considering process and climate studies from models and observations on a wide range of scales
We look forward to seeing you in Paris !
General information for the conference:
Sunday afternoon registration is optional, but you are encouraged to come on that day. Otherwise, a second registration time is scheduled from 8 to 9 am on Monday morning. The conference and registration are located at Sorbonne Auditorium.
For each Poster Session, we ask you to hang your poster in the morning and remove it after your poster session (after 6 p.m.). Poster boards will be available in the auditorium hall with assigned space. Each poster is associated with a number, which is available in the program, itself with a place shown on the auditorium map. The local hosts will help you if necessary. Posters should preferably be in A0 format maximum and portrait.
Possible Locations to Print a Poster near Sorbonne University:
Corep, 27 Rue Jussieu, 75005 Paris
Launay Imprimerie, 45 Rue Linné, 75005 Paris
For each Talk Session, we kindly ask you to submit your presentation, preferably in pdf format. A deposit link will be sent to you. Be sure to send it at least one day in advance, marking your surname_firstname_date. If you were unable to send your presentation in time, you can give it to us on a USB key before each session during the coffee or lunch break, or 15 minutes before the start of the morning session.
Reminder: the maximum duration is 12 minutes for presentation and 3 minutes for questions.
For lunch, meal tickets are available respecting your dietary restrictions, and will be given to you at registration. You can pick up your lunch box and have lunch outside the auditorium (see Location and Accomodation tab).
The conference dinner is scheduled for Wednesday at 7.30pm. A group departure will take place from the auditorium to reach the restaurant on foot (20-minute walk). If you wish to return home and/or come by metro, the station is Bastille (lines 1, 5 and 8). Make sure you keep your badge, as you'll be asked for it at the restaurant entrance.
!!! Important information about the 14th of July (and the week before) in Paris:
The 14th of July is a national holiday in France. In the morning there is a military parade on Les Champs Élysées street, with a parade of military aircrafts and helicopters as well, which you will hear everywhere in the city. They will also rehearse sometime during the week, probably in the morning, so we might hear them at some point during the conference.
In the evening of the 14th of July, fireworks will be set off from the Eiffel tower at around 11pm (and a concert will take place there before). If you want to go, beware that it should be extremely crowded. Also, the Eiffel tower will be closed on the 14th.
There will also be fireworks in the suburbs on the 13th of July, which might be audible in Paris at around 11 pm.

Conference topics
The conference will address the following topics, considering process and climate studies from models and observations on a wide range of scales:
Convective organization
What controls the mesoscale organization of shallow and deep convection, and what role does it play in weather and climate?
Cloud processes
How do micro to meso-scale processes control cloud phase, precipitation and cloud-radiative effects?
Cloud-circulation coupling
How do clouds interact with circulations and what role does this interaction play in weather and climate?
Climate feedbacks and sensitivity
How do clouds respond to external perturbations and what role does it play in climate change?
BreaKout Sessions
In addition to plenary sessions, there will be poster sessions and breakout groups around on-going GASS and CFMIP projects. Suggestions of breakout groups that strengthen collaboration between these projects are very welcome.
If you wish to self-organize a breakout group that is not already considered, please contact the organization committee (cfmip2023@lmd.ipsl.fr)
