This website presents my long‑standing work in collecting and researching military medals, with a particular focus on the awards of Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon). It serves as a central place to share my findings and to invite information, insights, and feedback from others who share an interest in military history and honours.
I began collecting and studying military medals in 1993. Although many publications exist on Orders, Decorations, and Medals from around the world, none were dedicated solely to Sri Lankan awards. To address this gap, I launched a comprehensive research project in 1996 to document every award related to Sri Lanka from 1795 to the present.
What began as a modest plan for a 100‑page booklet has grown into an archive of more than 3,000 pages. My research now includes:
Detailed information on each medal and award
Photographs of medals
Photographs and biographical details of recipients
Complete or near‑complete recipient lists for most awards
As this body of work has expanded, I am preparing to publish several books based on the research. Proposed covers for these volumes appear below. You may click on them—or use the navigation tabs at the top of the page—to explore each project in greater detail.
Over the years, I have been fortunate to receive support and contributions from many individuals around the world (see the Acknowledgements section). They have generously shared information from their own research or provided details about Ceylon‑related items in their collections. Many contributors are medal collectors and genealogists, while others are former members of the Armed Forces or Police in Sri Lanka—or relatives of such personnel.
Despite this extensive assistance, some important information is still missing, particularly regarding Honours and Awards of the present Republic of Sri Lanka. Without these details, my work will remain incomplete. I would be grateful for any help from readers who may be able to provide this information. A list of specific items I am seeking can be found in the Assistance Needed section.
Because this is a large and ongoing undertaking, I continue to collect data and would welcome contact from anyone who is a recipient of any of the awards covered in this research, or who knows of recipients. I am also interested in hearing from collectors who possess Orders, Decorations, or Medals that relate to Sri Lanka (Ceylon) in any way.
The objective of these projects is to record, for posterity, the names and deeds of the recipients of Orders, Decorations, and Medals associated with Ceylon and Sri Lanka—both military and civil.
I hope you enjoy exploring the contents of this website. It includes samples of my research, offering a preview of what the completed publications will look like. By contributing information or photographs, you can help make this work even more complete and accurate.
