Frequently Asked Questions
·
Who can join CESP?
CESP is open to any Malaysian citizen, 18 years old and above.
Is CESP a good programme to learn English?
CESP is not designed to teach you English but rather a "safe place" to practice and improve the conversational English skill you already have. We will informally assess you via a phone call to be sure you have the minimum ability to participate.
Can I invite my kids or a friend to join me in the sessions?
One of the strengths of CESP is that is is a 1 on 1 learning experience with a native English speaker. We would ask that you be sure that your children do not need your attention during the session and that your friends visit you another time!
Can I invite my friends to join CESP?
YES! Please tell your friends about CESP and encourage them to fill out an application form. Here's the link:

How will we meet each week with our language helper?
Most language pairs meet over Google Meet, but some choose an alternative like Zoom or even WhatsApp.
How long is CESP?
Most CESP modules are ten weeks long. You will have one weekly conversational session that is 45 minutes long.
· What happens if I can’t make a session?
Your language helper is a volunteer who believes in GSP programmes, enjoys relating cross-culturally and is glad to be of help. They have made a commitment for a certian number of weeks and a specific time each week. If you cannot attend the scheduled session the session is lost. It may not be rescheduled.
Can I choose my language helper?
CESP programme staff will make assignments based on the availablity of both language learner and language helper. They will also take into account possible areas of common interest and/or background to try to menjodohkan sebaik mungkin! :-)
What Happens Each Session?
Each session is divided into four parts - 1) Look Back; 2) Topical Discussion; 3) Wrap-Up; 4) Look Ahead. The Look Back section is an ice-breaker but not only allows you to "catch up" with one another, but also provides accountability for practicing your English and following up on anything the two of you decided to do as a result of your previous conversation! The Topical Discussion is the heart of the session in which you discuss a topic of your choice with questions provided. In the Wrap-Up, your language helper will provide feedback in the areas of pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar. The final Look Ahead section encourages you to share about your upcoming week as well as discuss any possible outcomes from your topical discussion.
What Do We Talk About Each Session?
Go to https://sites.google.com/view/cesp-malaysia/topics-a-to-z (the Topics A to Z) tab and click on "Over 100 Topics" and you will be able to view the suggested topics and questions. We'd encourage you to download the file and have it handy for use each session. If you want to discuss another topic, you can make the suggestion to your learner and work on questions together!
How do I communicate with my language helper?
While email is the default means of communication, we are encouraging our langauge helpers to download WhatsApp. Believe it or not, most people in the US not only do not use WhatsApp, but they have not even heard of it!
Will I have the same langauge helper every session? What if I do another module?
Once you are assigned a language helper, they will be your helper each session. If you want to continue with another module, you will be assigned a new helper. We believe this will help you grow you in new areas as each helper not only has a unique way of expressing him/herself but also strengths and weaknesses in helping the learner. If both learner and helper want to do a second module together, they may appeal for an exception to the CESP programme director.
· How do I pay for the programme?
You will receive instructions as to how to make a bank deposit / transfer. You will pay half of the total amount once your application is received and you are accepted into the programme. You will pay the remaining balance on week 5.
· Who do I contact if I have a question, suggestion or complaint?
We ALWAYS welcome communication from our learners - whether it be a compliment, a criticism or a suggestion!
