Punctuality. Westerners tend to be more time- oriented. They will set aside 45 minutes from the time of the scheduled start of the session. If you begin ten minutes late, your session may only last 35 minutes. In America, we say "you snooze (sleep), you lose!" Your language helper will wait no longer than 15 minutes for the start of the session.

Directness. Westerners tend to more direct. At times this more direct approach may come across as a bit impolite. Interestingly enough, the less direct approach of the East can be misunderstood by Westerners at times as being insincere or even dishonest. "Say what you mean and mean what you say!" is a saying in the West.

This directness will come into play in the midst of various parts of your conversation including your topics of discussion. You will note later on that the topic of the day is your choice as the learner. Having said that, a good conversation can easily shift directions. If you would rather not talk about something (ie politics, religion, etc), jangan malu beritahu (don't be shy to let them know!)

Transparency. A third value to highlight from the west is that of transparency. Perhaps it flows from the tendency to be more direct. While this may not be true of every person in the west, it is true of many. Westerners may share their thoughts and feelings with a bit more openness than you might be used to doing. I'd encourage you to allow yourself to be stretched in this direction. Often greater transparency (especially in the midst of our struggles) leads to better conversation and deeper relationship.

- A normal English course with lessons prepared by a trained teacher that focuses on grammar and evaluates what is learned on the basis of written tests.
- Led by a trained teacher who is able to answer any questions you may have about grammar or other details of language.
- A course that guarantees you will perform at a certain level.

- An opportunity to grow in oral competency and confidence as you interact for 45 minutes weekly with your language helper.
- Led by a native English speaker (perhaps a retiree) who is trained to meet you in your "English comfort zone" and help you stretch your vocabulary and increase your fluency over the ten weeks.
- An opportunity for you to take ownership for your development as you push yourself to grow in each weekly session.
