Taumarunui Silverback Boxing Academy initiated in 2015. There had not been a boxing club in Taumarunui for over 20 years.
Initially, the club was started from the garage of one of the coaches homes. The growth meant that another avenue was to be sourced, but with limited funds, this was always going to be a big ask. Four premises later T.S.B.A has secured a long term lease of the old fire station in Taumarunui.
The club caters for competitive amateur boxing as well as those just wanting to work on their fitness. At times there has been working done with children and adults with special needs.
T.S.B.A formalised into an official club and affiliated under the Taumarunui Youth and Community Trust in 2016 which have supported the club with all aspects of running the club such as; registrations, funding, travel, coach development.
T.S.B.A officially affiliated under the Central North Island Boxing Association to then have our for amateur boxer compete for the club in 2016.
The club is well supported by the local Taumarunui community and also has 5 volunteer coaches who put in many hours to coaching the boxers. Over time from setting up the club has seen hundreds of kids benefit from attending classes.
