Incoming Members 

 The Center Hill Middle School is a great band program and is regarded as one of the most successful and popular organizations on campus. Many students who join band in 6th grade continue on to be members of the award-winning Center Hill High School Band and other collegiate band programs around the state.  

Studies show that students who STUDY and PRACTICE music have higher test scores and achieve high academically. Students will not only learn how to play an instrument they will learn the value of teamwork, self-motivation, self-discipline, and many other skills needed in everyday life.  

We offer classes and private lessons on many different instruments, listed below: 

• Flute 

• Oboe

• Clarinet 

• Alto Saxophone 

• Bassoon 

• French Horn 

• Trumpet 

• Trombone 

• Euphonium 

• Tuba 

• Percussion 

No! While it can be helpful, it is not required. The directors will teach the students everything they need to know. 

We have two instrument testing dates in the spring where students will come in and test on all of the instruments. We take into consideration what instruments the students are interested in and what they tested the highest on to select their instrument. Announcements usually happen a few weeks after the final testing date. 

If your student misses the testing dates, we will be happy to test them at the beginning of school year! 

Yes! In fact, many of our band students participate on the football team, track team, softball team, choir, spotlight, CHMS Gazette, and the yearbook staff.

It varies depending on what instrument you play. We partner with a company out of Memphis called Amro Music, who offers a rent-to-own program for all beginning instruments. 

There is a flat fee at the beginning of the year that covers each student's shirt, polo, instrument maintenance supplies, etc. This fee is no more than $50/ year.

The only school provided instruments are French Horns and Tubas. 

 We work closely with the Amro Music store in Memphis, TN, and they offer a monthly rent-to-own program for all beginning instruments. We ask that you DO NOT purchase instruments from places that also sell groceries and car parts. These companies are not instrument manufacturers and make these instruments with the lowest quality materials possible to keep cost down. They generally do not last and cannot be repaired by any music stores once something breaks. 

As a general rule of thumb, consult one of the band directors before you purchase an instrument.
