Dr. Cem Soner, CFA, is a financial economist whose research focuses on political economy, financial markets, and regional inequality. His work examines how political shocks and uncertainty affect credit markets, sovereign bond yields, and SME finance across different geographical contexts.
His research has been published in the Journal of Rural Studies (Q1, ABS-3, 5-year IF: 6.1), with additional papers under review at leading journals. His work has been funded by the British Academy/Leverhulme Trust and the Taith Research Mobility Program (Welsh Government). He is a former recipient of the Jean Monnet Scholarship (European Union) and the Bangor Business School Doctoral Scholarship.
Dr. Soner has presented his research at international conferences and workshops, including the MoFiR Banking Workshop, the BAFA IPSIG Doctoral Colloquium, and the International Accounting & Finance Doctoral Symposium. He is also a volunteer mentor with the Graduate Applications in Economics Network (GAIN), where he supports African students through the PhD application process. His mentees have successfully secured placements in North American economics programs with full scholarships.
Prior to academia, Dr. Soner worked as a consultant in the international development sector. He holds a BSc in Economics from Bilkent University (Türkiye), an MSc in Corporate Finance from SDA Bocconi (Italy), and a PhD in Finance from Bangor University. He is a CFA Charterholder.
