In 2021, I had the amazing opportunity to do an academic semester at Wichita State University, Kansas through a scholarship granted by BECAL and the CPK. I was an exchange student during the Fall semester (August-December).
Through this academic semester I grew a lot academically, professionally, culturally and personally.
My subjects
I took 4 classes there, which counted as 12 credit hours.
The subjects were the following:
Team Work, Leadership and Group Communication
Public Speaking
Creative Writing
Speaking Spanish in the U.S.
Each of my classes were wonderful. Through them, I learned a lot more about my identity, and the value of my language and culture. These classes also helped me grow as a leader and as a human being, and to communicate better. Furthermore, I learned a lot about other cultures. I had amazing teachers who were really knowledgeable and were always willing to help.
I also had the opportunity to meet people from all around the world, and communicate with all of them through our connection bridge the English language.
I had the amazing opportunity to observe classes at a Child Development Center at WSU (thanks to my exchange coordinator and friend Ann) and learned new teaching techniques and strategies that I am now applying to my English classes.
I worked as a volunteer with American students from the Spanish program at Wichita State University, and help them improve their Spanish speaking skills through one-on-one classes once a week for about 3 hours. This was such an amazing experience and I got the change to make new friends!
I had different opportunities to share about my culture. I went to a high school with some other Paraguayan friends, and we shared a presentation about our country. We also taught students Spanish and Guarani. Moreover, I was part of different fairs where we would make people try our traditional dishes from Paraguay, and show them the Ñanduti and other art works.
I had the privilege of having been selected as one of the three WSU BECAL-CPK ambassadors from my semester.
We have been working in different fairs in Paraguay since December sharing about our experience and helping other students with the application process of the scholarship.
When I came back to Paraguay, I had an urge to give back to my country what I received. So, I talked to my CPK coordinator and asked her if we could organize a series of webinars where all of the scholarship holders share what we have learned in our different classes. She said "Of course!" from the beginning and since then, she has been helping me develop this project along with other students.
We have been running these webinars once a month and different students share about their experience and their classes.
Webinar: Inteligencia Emocional en Liderazgo
My classmate from my Leadership class, Belén Gaete, and I hosted this webinar on Leadership and Emotional Intelligence, which was a topic that we covered in our COMM 328 class taught by Eric Wilson. We invited our professor to attend our webinar, and he was willing to do so! He also shared his experience and knowledge with us during this session.
Testimony
Below I include an article from the UNA and a video from BECAL where I share a little bit more about my experience.
