The importance and benefits of dance, when it comes to teen's mental health
Hagensen, K.P. Using a Dance/Movement Therapy-Based Wellness Curriculum: An Adolescent Case Study. American Journal of Dance Therapy 37, 150–175 (2015). https://doi-org.summit.csuci.edu/10.1007/s10465-015-9199-4
In my research paper, I want to connect dance and the impact it has on mental health in teens. This article is useful because it connects teens with the benefits of dance when it comes to mental well being. Hagensen states that dance therapy is a psychotherapy, which is used around the world. I am also able to connect the positive impacts when females participate in creative dance.
Swami, V., Harris, A.S. Dancing Toward Positive Body Image? Examining Body-Related Constructs with Ballet and Contemporary Dancers at Different Levels. American Journal of Dance Therapy 34, 39–52 (2012). https://doi-org.summit.csuci.edu/10.1007/s10465-012-9129-7
This article takes an approach on body image on women and how dance can make an impact on that. It also states that the anxiety about appearance and negative body image are “normative” experiences among women globally. This has a huge impact in teens, which can support my ideas. This article also gives two examples of dance and their impact. Belly dancing is one example, and has been shown to hold more inclusive body image norms, they express a lack of pressure to conform to the “thin” ideal. The other is contemporary dance, and how it takes from dance therapy/movement the integration of mind-body dynamics through movement experiences, body awareness, attending the body while in interaction, and creative expressions.

This article helps prove that dance encourages positive group dynamics and communication. One thing that Lorenzi points out, is “Students of multicultural and minority populations in secondary schools test as kinesthetic learners.” This is important, when it comes to students being successful and how dance can help. Creating dance programs in high schools can really have a positive impact on students. One other thing that this article can help, is that dance serves as a tremendous and vital outlet for stress, and leads to better health. As humans, we were created with the need to move, enjoy relationships with others, and desire to express ourselves.

This article helps give data driven facts, for example the California Department of Education conducted a study that showed a district relationship between academic achievements and physical fitness, among California's public school students. The statewide study provided evidence that physical well-being of students have a direct impact on their ability to achieve academically. CDE says that students achieve best when they are physically fit (CDE 2002). Only 25% of 5th, 7th, and 9th graders are physically fit. Most states don’t follow guidelines that require daily physical education for all k-12 students. 14% of kids 12-19 years old are overweight. I can use these findings in my paper, to help support the impact of dance to students. Another fact stated is that the number of capillaries increases around the neurons of the brain, which pushes an increase in blood and oxygen. Gross-motor repetitive movements stimulate the production of dopamine (mood-enhancing neurotransmitter). The release of chemicals such as serotonin and dopamine reduces depression by as much as 50%. I am able to connect dance and how our brains react to dance. Although this is mostly studies done, I can really use this information to support me, especially since this is in California and I can relate that to my paper.
