JUNETEENTH celebrates the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States in 1865.
President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation freeing enslaved people in 1863. Yet it took another 2-1/2 years before those enslaved in Texas were finally emancipated after the Civil War ended -- on June 19, 1865. The former slaves celebrated jubilantly, establishing Juneteenth, America's second Independence Day.
