- Maximum grant $500.00 to be pro-rated if necessary for a NSTU Special Association Sponsored Conference
- The Professional Development Committee MUST RECEIVE claims online only no later than November 15th (end of business day). NO MAILED FORMS! (This includes interschool mail.) Prior approval is not required.
- Expenses for Accommodations will only be reimbursed where the teacher must travel more than 100 KM from their home to the conference location

The nomination for the president of Colchester East Hants local open Wednesday, March 5, at 6 PM, and nominations will close April 2 at 5 PM. The election will be on April 30. Shannon Roy and Kasi Humber are elections officers if you have any questions. There is a short form required to run, and it is available here: https://forms.gle/iLpKm9g8xfHKFyVL6
There are also several positions on the local executive: 1st VP, Treasurer, VP Member Engagement, VP Professional Learning & Wellness, Member at Large (if there is not a past president). Dear members,

In our current contract, our members gained two self directed PD days - an ask that members have been requesting for years. Our first of these days is approaching and I want to make sure that everyone is aware of the contractual language. It is important that new contract items are followed so that they do not morph into something other than what was originally intended.

Article 25.05(v): SELF-DIRECTED PD DAYS - a total of two (2) days per school year for teachers to work at their school or worksite as scheduled by the employer. This time is to be used for work as determined by the teacher, including but not limited to marking, preparation and professional collaboration.

Teachers are entitled to determine what professional duties they undertake during this time and the employer cannot mandate meetings or the performance of any particular task.

If you are being asked by admin to attend meetings or anything other than what is stated in the contractual language above, please contact me as soon as possible.

I hope everyone had an enjoyable summer and even better first week! Let's have a wonderful 2024-2025 school year.

Folks are encouraged to gather at Civic Square for opening ceremonies and entertainment from 12-1PM, at which point the parade will depart Lorne Street, and funnel back to Civic Square via Forrester Street at approx. 2PM (a graphic of the parade route, and map of Civic Square is attached). The Fun Day concert will take place from 2-4PM

I know you may have a lot of questions about what a strike vote could mean, at this point we know that a strong YES vote from membership on April 11 will show the government that the NSTU stands 100% in solidarity with our bargaining team. A strong yes mandate from members will provide a better bargaining position for them when they return to the table on April 15. The Spring Socials are being held at Shooters, in Enfield on Friday, April 12 and Truro Fire Hall on Friday, April 19.

Local Council Meeting Wednesday, November 29, 2023 6pm at Truro Fire Hall. This meeting is open to all members. Reps please remember to bring money for dance tickets!
On Wednesday, November 29,your Provincial Executive is asking all NSTU members to wear their “Our Kid’s Can’t Wait” buttons and to display their “Our Kid’s Can’t Wait” stickers. Remember that all unionized employees have the right to wear union messages in the workplace. Leading up to and including this day we are also asking that members take a moment to share NSTU social media posts and to take photos wearing the “Our Kid’s Can’ Wait” message (avoid including students) and sharing on social media. During this social media push we will be utilizing teacher comments supplied through our recent survey to illustrate how schools, students and- teachers are impacted by the teacher shortage.

CEHL is looking for members to serve on the BIPOC Bachelor of Education Bursary Committee. We are looking for members who identify as part of the BIPOC community to help select the bursary recipients for 2024. If you are interested please contact Lydia Negus lydianegus@nstu.ca The Committee meets once in February after the applications have been received to be reviewed, scored and recipients decided.
Christmas Dance 2023 is being hosted at Inn on Prince on Friday, December 15 9pm-1am. Tickets for CEHL Active Members is $20 and Substitutes, Retired Teachers and Guests are $25. Music provided by Usual Suspects and appetizers will be served during the evening. Tickets can be purchased at the November rep meeting or by sending an e-transfer to cehlnstu@gmail.com

The Provincial Executive has engaged a mobilization effort. This effort has a few components: press releases and traditional media, social media, as well as a day of action later in the month. The message around this effort is a continuation of the “Our Kids Can’t Wait" campaign that the NSTU launched last spring. REPS: All sites should have received buttons & stickers to share with members, if you have not received a package from Halifax, please let me know as soon as possible.

The NSTU will be hosting the 2nd Encourage Engage Evolve Summit 2023 to be held at the Hotel Halifax on December 15th and 16th, 2023. This summit is an opportunity to engage directly with racialized members to provide space for their voices to be heard through networking and professional development sessions. The ultimate goal is for this event is intended to create opportunities for building equity, diversity, and inclusion within the NSTU. Colchester East Hants Local is entitled to send a member who identifies as Indigenous, Black or racialized, if you are interested please reach out to Nadine cehpresident@nstu.ca by Friday, November 3, 2023.

We are looking for delegates for Annual Council 2024 (May 3, 4 &5 in Halifax)! As a delegate you are expected to attend 2 meetings prior to Council, November 8 & April 17, as well as attend all sessions of council. This reimbursement can include conference registration fee, mileage, lunch, and hotel (only for Thursday night if conference is more than 100kms from your residence). Member Engagement Day at Riverbreeze is back again this year on Saturday, September 23, 2023 at Riverbreeze Corn Maze. This is a free event for members and their families. Please arrive between 11-1 to receive your entrance bracelets.
Teachers within five (5) years of retirement are eligible for the Retirement Session & Pension Workshops but must register and receive approval from CCRCE to attend. Dates for our region are October 4 & 5 (Amherst), October 25 & 26 (New Glasgow) and January 9 & 10 (Truro). Deadline to apply is September 22.
Summer University Reimbursement form is active on Integrated Services. Deadline to submit is October 15, NO EXCEPTIONS! Week one is done and I hope that after a week of nervous energy and "being on" you all took some time to rest and reflect on the positives as you ready yourself for a full week ahead.

The first monthly draw launched on Wednesday, September 6 and will close Wednesday, September 13. Please include all your details and ensure you use a non-employer email. Only one entry per member, multiple entries will disqualify you from winning. The September draw is a surprise gift card but I heard a rumour that it is a popular shopping spot for teaching and classroom supplies.

Welcome back Colchester East Hants Members!

I hope everyone had an enjoyable summer and feel prepared to begin the 2023-24 school year.
