NSTU is hosting a Summer Leadership Institute at St FX University August 12-14. CEHL Executive members attend to engage in education, networking and socialization with other NSTU leaders. We had strong representation at Annual Council in Halifax, May 1-3. CEHL had 4 resolutions adopted in the pre-council vote: 2026-40, 2026-52, 2026-55 and 2026-59. One resolution was withdrawn, 2026-04. The final resolution of Council was from CEHL and was adopted. We also had the most contentious resolution which passed with a 132-131 vote!

Resolutions from CEHL included changing union dues to a percentage union membership fee (1.453% of the first tier ITC/TC5/VTCII), issues related to GBV curriculum and delivery, policy regarding AI, virtual options for October Conference Day, and dedicated time during work hours for Vector Training.

Dear members,

In our current contract, our members gained two self directed PD days - an ask that members have been requesting for years. Our first of these days is approaching and I want to make sure that everyone is aware of the contractual language. It is important that new contract items are followed so that they do not morph into something other than what was originally intended.

Article 25.05(v): SELF-DIRECTED PD DAYS - a total of two (2) days per school year for teachers to work at their school or worksite as scheduled by the employer. This time is to be used for work as determined by the teacher, including but not limited to marking, preparation and professional collaboration.

Teachers are entitled to determine what professional duties they undertake during this time and the employer cannot mandate meetings or the performance of any particular task.

If you are being asked by admin to attend meetings or anything other than what is stated in the contractual language above, please contact me as soon as possible.

Welcome back Colchester East Hants Members!

I hope everyone had an enjoyable summer and even better first week! Let's have a wonderful 2024-2025 school year.

Executive Planning was a productive and we have many exciting social events, engaging professional development and family events planned for our members this year. Please check your NSTU email and Facebook often for upcoming events.

Monthly draws are back this year! Reminders: members may only enter each draw once and members must use a NON-EMPLOYER email to be entered. These draws are for members with term, prob and permanent contracts. Discretionary Day for members needs to be requested in Easy Connect and use Code 0151, if you scroll to the bottom of the list you will find it.
Teachers within five (5) years of retirement are eligible for the Retirement Session & Pension Workshops but must register and receive approval from CCRCE to attend. All members received correspondence from Vickie Wynn on Friday, September 6 that includes the code for Easy Connect and a form that needs to be filled out and returned. Deadline to apply is Friday, September 20. Dates for our region are October 2 & 3 (Amherst), November 5 & 6 (Pictou) and December 3 & 4 (Truro).
Summer University Reimbursement form is active on Integrated Services. Deadline to submit is October 15. Please make sure you have the correct information, receipt and grades attached and retain your email confirmation. Folks are encouraged to gather at Civic Square for opening ceremonies and entertainment from 12-1PM, at which point the parade will depart Lorne Street, and funnel back to Civic Square via Forrester Street at approx. 2PM (a graphic of the parade route, and map of Civic Square is attached). The Fun Day concert will take place from 2-4PM

I know you may have a lot of questions about what a strike vote could mean, at this point we know that a strong YES vote from membership on April 11 will show the government that the NSTU stands 100% in solidarity with our bargaining team. A strong yes mandate from members will provide a better bargaining position for them when they return to the table on April 15. The NSTU is updating this section of the website as questions come in from members (strikevote@nstu.ca) and there are other useful resources that may help inform our members about the bargaining process to date.

On Wednesday, November 29,your Provincial Executive is asking all NSTU members to wear their “Our Kid’s Can’t Wait” buttons and to display their “Our Kid’s Can’t Wait” stickers. Remember that all unionized employees have the right to wear union messages in the workplace. Leading up to and including this day we are also asking that members take a moment to share NSTU social media posts and to take photos wearing the “Our Kid’s Can’ Wait” message (avoid including students) and sharing on social media. During this social media push we will be utilizing teacher comments supplied through our recent survey to illustrate how schools, students and- teachers are impacted by the teacher shortage.

The Provincial Executive has engaged a mobilization effort. This effort has a few components: press releases and traditional media, social media, as well as a day of action later in the month. The message around this effort is a continuation of the “Our Kids Can’t Wait" campaign that the NSTU launched last spring. The NSTU will be hosting the 2nd Encourage Engage Evolve Summit 2023 to be held at the Hotel Halifax on December 15th and 16th, 2023. This summit is an opportunity to engage directly with racialized members to provide space for their voices to be heard through networking and professional development sessions. The ultimate goal is for this event is intended to create opportunities for building equity, diversity, and inclusion within the NSTU. As a delegate you are expected to attend 2 meetings prior to Council, November 8 & April 17, as well as attend all sessions of council.
