School Advisory Council (SAC)
What is SAC?
“The purpose of school councils is, through the active participation of parents, to improve pupil achievement and to enhance the accountability of the education system to parents” (See ON. Reg. 612 of the Education Act)
•SACs can make recommendations to their principals and school boards on any matter.
•Principals and school boards must consult with SACs on a variety of matters that affect student learning.
•They must also consider recommendations made by SACs and report back on how they plan to act on their advice.
Why is Parent Involvement Important?
One of the most significant factors contributing to a child’s success in school.
Students attend school more regularly; they complete more homework in a consistent manner and demonstrate more positive attitudes towards school.
Their children are more likely to complete high school.
What are Other Reasons to be Involved?
Parents and caregivers can:
Learn more about the school and its staff
Get to know other caregivers
Understand the strengths and the pressure points at the school
Show their children that they care about education/school
Have an avenue to bring forward ideas and concerns
Contribute to shared goals for student success and/or community building
