The Iowa House Commerce Committee voted 19 to 3 to pass HSB 148 (renumbered as HF 781), which would finally add casinos to the Iowa Smokefree Air Act. Now it is eligible to be voted on in the full House. 

Please email your state representative and ask them to support HF 781.  It’s time for Iowa’s commercial casinos to be included in the Iowa Smokefree Air Act to give employees a 100% smokefree environment. 

Decades ago, the U.S. Surgeon General concluded that there are no safe levels of secondhand smoke. Separating people who smoke from those who do not, cleaning the air, and ventilating buildings cannot eliminate exposure of workers and nonsmokers to secondhand smoke. 100% smokefree workplace policies are the only effective way to eliminate secondhand smoke exposure. Unfortunately, casino, bar and restaurant workers are more exposed to toxic secondhand smoke in their jobsite compared to other segments of the U.S. Every person deserves to breathe smokefree air at work.
