This page provides brief summaries of capstone projects from 2021-2025. Sponsors are listed below the project titles. Each project received support from a team of two or more mentors from the sponsoring organizations. Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT)
Small scale culvert under highway design project. Sediment, fish passage, and flooding concerns. Hydraulics and roadway design were considered in the possible realignment of a culvert under a main highway. Design solutions included traffic control plans, realignment of the highway, realignment of the creek and culvert, design of the culvert, easement considerations with surrounding properties, stream restoration, and the structural design of the culvert.

Three-story campus building with laboratories and classrooms, including a 125 seat lecture hall. Designed to LEED Silver equivalence. The project focused on engineering solutions for an existing architectural design. Capstone project designs included structural systems, foundation, building mechanical systems (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC)), acoustic and thermal performance of the building envelope, and stormwater management.

HDR
Large scale transportation project with a focus on bus rapid transit through a large corridor. The project was isolated to an intersection near a major interstate with the possibility for design of the main intersection (signal timing, geometry, etc.), design of surrounding intersections (signal timing, roundabout, etc.), and the design of the interstate on-ramp.

Mackenzie
Two-story building combining police station and city hall functions. Located in a flood plain. The project focused on engineering solutions for an existing architectural design. Capstone project designs included structural and foundation systems with consideration for potential inundation, daylighting and lighting systems, acoustic and thermal performance of the building envelope, parking and overall site layouts, and stormwater management.

Four-story campus building with unique classrooms, including a theater-in-the-round and other learning spaces. Designed to LEED Gold. The project focused on engineering solutions for an existing architectural design. Three-story building on a dense downtown site. Two floors of veterinary hospital space, one floor of general office space, and below-grade parking. Revitalization of a park on a site that previously housed the city's water treatment plant and still has a major wastewater lift station. Capstone project park features included a pavilion with overlook, new sidewalks and pathways, parking areas, signage, lighting, plantings and irrigation. Steep slopes, maintenance of truck access to the pump station, historic structures, and accessibility (i.e., American with Disabilities Act (ADA) were among the design considerations.

Multi-story student housing for Oregon State University's Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport. A Complete Street project that also included a replacement of an existing gravity sewer main with a new pipeline under the South Yamhill River. Much of the roadway needed to be repaved. Sidewalks were in poor condition, missing, or non-compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

A four-story student hub/classroom building on the OSU Cascades campus. Ray Hall houses classrooms, laboratories, makerspace and offices. The building was designed to be a showcase of the campus' sustainability goals and was partly located on a reclaimed pumice mine. Capstone project designs included structural systems, foundation, building mechanical systems (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC)), lighting/daylighting design, thermal performance of the building envelope, and stormwater management.

Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT)
Realignment of OR 140 and redesign of an intersection with poor sight distance and a history of serious and fatal injury crashes. The realignment provided the necessary separation of the OR140 and OR66 intersection from the OR140/OR66/US97 Interchange, improving safety by increasing the distance between traffic signals. Designs considered pedestrians and a future commercial development.
