What is Chinese Medicine?

In Chinese philosophy, the world is made up of yin and yang energies that exist in a constant and inseparable act of push and pull. Chinese medicine is an extension of this simple yet all encompassing philosophy of the natural world. In essence, Chinese medicine is natural organic law, the "motive for evolution" and the "source of universal being." Through observation of natural law, the ancients developed yin & yang theory. Originating from geological and astrological observations, such as night/day or wet/dry, yin & yang theory can be applied to everything such as rest/movement, winter/summer, and birth/death. In Chinese medicine, disease occurs when the balance between yin and yang is disrupted leading to a myriad of conditions. With the principles of Chinese medicine and yin & yang theory, acupuncture and herbal medicine strive to re-balance these two energies to regain a state of wellness. It is through this eloquent philosophy that Chinese medicine has been able to explain and reconcile the advances in modern medicine, physics, and chemistry without amending its core logic.

Acupuncture & Moxibustion

Acupuncture is an ancient technique that involves inserting fine needles into certain points on the body, which encourages the body's ability to heal and regenerate. While acupuncture is most common for the relief of pain, evidence-based medicine acknowledges the effectiveness of acupuncture therapy in treating gastrointestinal conditions, autoimmune diseases, menstrual irregularities, post-stroke care, headaches, stress, and much more.

Moxibustion is the tonification aspect of acupuncture. Traditional moxibustion involves burning compacted purified mugwort on the handle of the needle, warming the surrounding tissue. To avoid sensitivities to smoke and scents, our clinic uses an infrared TDP lamp, which mimics the properties of burning mugwort.

Herbal Medicine

Herbal medicine is the yin aspect to the yang nature of acupuncture and moxibustion. A tang, or herbal soup, is a personalized prescription designed to augment and continue the effect of an acupuncture treatment. Herbal prescriptions can be used for both acute and chronic situations and were often used as a standalone medicine. However, the best clinical results are observed when herbal and acupuncture therapies are combined.

The herbs used in Chinese medicine range from potent stand alone single plant parts to herbal soups or medicinal tonics that contain everyday spices. Many herbs serve as the basis for some of the most successful pharmaceutical medications in history, as chemical constituents were often extracted from natural remedies. While herbal medicines are certainly not without their safety profiles, they have similar pharmaceutical properties with fewer safety concerns than pharmaceuticals. This is due to the balance of synergistic constituents at lower concentrations. All of our practitioners have been extensively trained on how to prescribe herbal medicines that do not interfere with the actions of pharmaceuticals you are already taking. In addition, there is no risk of adulteration or contamination of the herbs used in our clinic. All of our vendors are cGMP certified and provide laboratory quality dietary supplements and herbal products.
