All deputies within the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office are required by policy to request a supervisor when one has been requested. If there is no supervisor available, a local agency may be contacted to assist with the supervisor request. It must also be noted that a local agency's supervisor does not have the same power over a CCSO deputy compared to a supervisor with the CCSO.
Cherokee County deputies have the ability to enforce laws anywhere in the state if needed however, CCSO deputies will focus primarily their duties in Cherokee County. Deputies are to respect the jurisdiction of other established law enforcement agencies within Cherokee County. Deputies can be seen assisting these agencies on incidents or even responding if the agencies don't have enough personnel available.
Whichever deputy holds the highest rank during a shift is considered the Watch Commander. If there is no deputy who holds the rank of Sergeant I or higher on duty, then there is no Watch Commander present during that shift. A Watch Commander is the deputy considered to be responsible for deputies and their conduct while they are on duty. The Watch Commander is also responsible for cross-department communication and ensuring that "radio checks" are answered.
Deputies have requirements laid out in their policies on what to provide to you in the case you request for them to identify. In most cases, the deputy is to provide their last name and badge number to you. The CCSO recommends that you obtain the deputy's badge number over their callsign because their badge number will not change with promotions/demotions.
