Digital Photo I

Digital Photography I (ARTS 1850) is an introduction to the technique of digital photography and its use as a form of artistic expression and visual communication. Through demonstrations and assignments, a survey of work by contemporary artists, and a final portfolio, students will be introduced to the vocabulary, concepts, tools and aesthetic possibilities of digital photography.

This semester photography students faced restrictions imposed by the pandemic which limited their access to a variety of subject matter. These photographs, selected from students' final portfolios, represent how students overcame those obstacles and used them as inspiration for the creation of some exceptional work. Loneliness, isolation and their impact were recurring themes throughout the semester. Students expressed and documented their experiences by photographing their immediate environment, family, and often by turning their cameras on themselves. Several students chose to express themselves by building or constructing imaginary scenes through staging, digital composite or a combination of the two.
