Richard was educated in Capetown, then Hayleybury and Lincoln College Oxford, where he read PPE. Then mining financial business in the City of London, and worked in USA and West Africa. In 1962 joined McKinsey’s London office. In 1969 he joined a start-up freight container leasing business, and became Interway CEO in New York. In 1981 the company was sold to Transamerica, HQ in San Francisco. Richard became President and CEO of the group in 1991, based in Los Angeles, and moved to San Francisco in 1994. Retired in 1999. Trustee of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Married Rosemary Buttling in 1964. Great cricket fan; member of MCC and watches cricket every summer, as they have a summer home in England, although based most of the year in San Francisco and Indian Wells, California.
Richard was christened in St. George’s Anglican Church in Luanshya , Northern Rhodesia , as one of the first children there in 1934 . 147 years earlier in Sydney , Cape Breton, HJFinn, his great great grandfather, was christened in 1787 at St George’s Anglican Church, as one of the first children there . That is the British Empire expanding around the world !
