Google offers a choice of theme styles, colours and fonts. I have chosen Simple style, dark blue theme colour and light font style for this site. I will probably use the same for other sites, just changing the theme colour.
Each page has 12 layout columns, with small gaps between each and wider margins on the left and right of the page. This section has an Emphasis 1 background. Each section has a standard top and bottom margin.
The top section is Title only (and Title text style) rather than Large Banner or Banner to save space. You can also delete the top section, for a bit more flexibility at the top.
A 2 column layout works well on modern laptops with of 6 guide (layout) columns.
Columns are automatically arranged vertically as a single column on phones or if computer window too narrow to view comfortably.
A 3 column layout each of 4 guide columns is also possible. This section has Emphasis 2 background.

45x30 image in 1 guide column + 3 column text
8 column text alongside on computer, but below on phone, or if window width reduced significantly.
300x50 image in default 4 guide columns to overcome image and text alignment problems. Image full width on phone.
300x50 image in 3 guide columns + 9 guide column text. Image 3/4 width and centred on phone.
300x200 image scaled to fit 4 guide columns + 8 guide column text. Image on the left to precede the text on phone.
2 column + 4 column text looks OK on computer, but text below centred image on phone.
Google now lets you link image and text boxes.
But you need to choose the right size images for the chosen text box width, as the images are resized to the column width.
320x80 sample image looks ok across 4 guide columns.
320x50 image on white background at default upload size (5 guide columns)
