Com.Comm. Lab

Computational Communication Lab

The Computational Communication Research Lab is a research team dedicated to exploring social science issues through the application of data science methods. The lab's principal investigator holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from National Chiao Tung University and has been utilizing computer-based techniques such as social network analysis, social simulation, and natural language processing to study various topics in social science and communication. Our research scope includes but is not limited to opinion analysis, epidemic propagation, information dissemination, digital diplomacy, online communities, ideological polarization, and stereotypes. Additionally, we also focus on issues in the field of news communication, such as the perception and impact of fake news, as well as research on news headlines.

Recruiting

Recent projects and activities

Due to Prof. Hsieh's computer science background, we participated in many hackathons and programs/projects related to teaching programming for social scientists.
In 2021 Autumn, Prof. Hsieh along with several scholars interested in using computational methods to deal with social science problems, host the "Computational Communication Conference 2021 In 2019 Autumn, Prof. Hsieh participated a legal hackathon with a legal-background lab member and two students from political science. We implemented a chat bot to help the general public to know the feature of legal text.

Recent lab activities.

In Nov. 2019, our Lab members organized a hands-on workshop on data driven news report. Using distracted accounts and behaviors as data,  participants were introduced how to detect coordinated and collaborative behaviors by network analysis. We also introduce basic R programming for participants without programming experience. Many participants come from Taiwanese news media.
