Established in March 2005, the Centre for Oceans, Rivers, Atmosphere and Land Sciences (CORAL) at Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, provides quality teaching and advanced training in Earth System Science and Technology. The centre offers a two-year Post graduation Programme (M. Tech.) in Earth System Science and Technology, besides MS and PhD programmes. The centre is involved in frontier research in oceanography, atmospheric sciences, and land system studies. The centre is actively engaged in various sponsored research programmes (funded by INCOIS, MoES, DST, CSIR, IFS, SAC, etc.) and is part of the Centre of Excellence in Climate Change funded by DST, Government of India.
IIT Kharagpur is located about 140 km (2 hours and 45 minutes by car) from Kolkata Airport and about 5 km (10 minutes by car) from Kharagpur railway station. Taxicab or autorickshaw can be hired from the railway station to reach the institute. The weather in Kharagpur during February and early March is enjoyable with minimum and maximum air temperatures of 15-16°C and 28-29°C, respectively.
