6th Graders Take to the Woods
(From the Clinton Topper April 20, 1972, page 3)
Sixth grade students of the Clinton Junior High School will don their camping and hiking outfits and carry their bedrolls to the awaiting school buses on the morning of April 24 for their week’s program in outdoor education at Camp Upham Woods, a camp operated by the University of Wisconsin, at the Wisconsin Dells. This is the fourteenth year that students of the sixth grade, their teachers and other staff members and resource personnel have taken part in the outdoor education program which is part of the junior high school curriculum on conservation study.
Students are presently studying in their classes about conservation and are working in their science classes on pre-camping activities which will lead up to the outdoor program at the Dells. Letters have been written by the students in their English classes to all people involved in the program, resource personnel from Clinton, Rock County, Madison and the Dells area. Math classes have worked out per pupil costs for budget purposes for the week’s program, and have also worked on problems related to the area and value of the camp site and island at Upham Woods Almost all parts of the school’s curriculum come into play prior to the actual week’s program in late April.
Camp counselors and staff have worked out details in improving the week’s activities and are busy making final preparations and arrangements for the program. The outdoor education program is directed by Robert Jensen, Jr. High Principal. Teachers involved in the week’s program are: Dorothy Case, Tim Sukow, David Sukow, Thomas Vogt and Clint Warne. Other counselors Include: Mrs. Richard Schneider, Mrs. James Mezera, Mrs. Bruce Lucas, Rev. Russell Tomlinson, Mrs. Roy Kiekhafer, Mrs. John Glddings, and Mrs. Michael Ross. Mrs. group as nurse; and cooks for the week include Mmes. Edwin Bobolz, David Hutchinson and John Giddings, in addition to staff cooks at the Wisconsin Dells. The program is assisted by resource personnel such as: Hugh Alberts, Rock County Agent; Dr. John Heller, Youth Specialist from the Univ. of Wisconsin; Mr. James Lawson from the Wisconsin Dells; and Clinton businessmen: Louis Shull, Herb Reffue, Leonard Daniels, Charles Ondell, Lester Hahn, Bruce Lucas.
This year there are 117 sixth grade students making the trip for the five-day period.
