Last Saturday, we celebrated our 20th year as a church. Over 60 of us got on a bus and went out to spend the day together in Cieneguilla, along with Pastor Rick Heilman, who founded the church 20 years ago. The day was full of games, fellowship, worship, testimonies, prayer, and baptisms. The sun didn't come out the whole day until it was time for baptisms, which made the pool just a little warmed than freezing. But at the heart of everything, what resonated in each and every story was the faithfulness of God to begin, maintain, and finish the work that He begins in us and in His church. All He looks for is hearts and lives surrendered to Him, and He will do more than we could ever think or imagine.
The past week, we were extremely blessed as a church to have our first team since COVID join us to serve us and serve the people of Peru. The week was full of so many special events, from ministry to children in Chilca to Coffee Shop night and conversation clubs. Everyone involved from both churches spent all their time pouring out into all those they met around them. It was such a sweet time of evangelism, ministry, and fellowship. We are so thankful for this group and the time, money, and energy they spent to come and bless us. Here at CCESL, we're looking forward to all the opportunities the Lord will continue to bring out of this last week to minister to the communities around us.
This month for our normal women's fellowship, we were so blessed to be able to have our first ever Women's Retreat. Leona Karni, a missionary and Bible teacher of more than 45 years blessed us with special teachings about the week before the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. The weekend was full of prayer, fellowship, and mediation on God's Word. We are so thankful for the time Leona spent with us and for this opportunity we had as mother, daughters, and most importantly children of God to strengthen our relationship with the Lord.
Surely the most important thing we do at CCESL is study the Word of God together and pray for one another, but we are so thankful for the opportunities God gives us to have fun and fellowship together, using nature and things we love to do. Saturday, we spent time at the park playing games, eating, praying together, and watching the sunset over the pacific ocean. Sunday after church, we ate lunch together as we usually do, and then a group of the men got together for a soccer game. It is often in these times of fellowship that were able to grow into a deeper relationship with each other and learn how to care for and love each other more deeply.
December was a very busy month full of outreach but also full of special times to fellowship as a church. We were so blessed at both our Christmas Banquet and our New Years Eve party to spend time together laughing, eating, praying, and worshiping as the family we've become in Christ. We look forward to this New Year and many more opportunities to love each other and grow together.
It's December, which means even more opportunities to get out in the streets and share the love of Christ. Yesterday we began our yearly Christmas Caroling outreach in the streets of Lima. This year we started close to the church in the park at the center of the district of Jesus Maria, where the church is located. A group of us went out to sing, invite people to a movie night, and share the message of Christmas with anyone who was willing to listen. We followed it up with a free movie night at the church where quite a few people from the park showed up to eat paneton, drink hot chocolate, watch a movie, and once more hear the Gospel. We are very excited for what is still to come this month as we get out into the streets and share with those around us.
Last Wednesday, we were so blessed to be able to spend the day together in Cieneguilla as a church family. We swam, we ate, we played games, we sang, we studied God's Word, and we prayed together. At one point in the day, we studied Ephesians 4 talking about unity in the body of Christ. With all that our little body has gone through in the last year, it was a timely message and an important reminded to check our hearts and lives and be sure we are "Making every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace." (Ephesians 4:3) We are so thankful for the time we were able to spend together and pray that the Lord will use it to continue to build His church.
In this day and age, it's hard to find a place for your kids to play and learn where you know they will be safe and learn things that will help them, not harm them. At CCESL, our kids have begun to study Psalms 139. Each week, the kids learn a different verse from that chapter through songs, games, Bible story, and application. We have an amazing group of faithful teachers to study and pray over each verse during the week to be able to teach it to the kids in a way they will be able to remember and apply as they grow up. We have three separate classes: Babies to 2 yrs, 2 to 5 years old, and 6 - 10 years old. There are kids classes during both classes on Sunday Mornings and they are both bilingual so they can all understand, no matter which language they speak. If you are looking for a place where your kids can learn and grow in a safe environment while you can learn and grow at the same time, we invite you to join us on Sunday at either 9:30 am or 11:30 am.
This last Wednesday just happened to be a holiday in Peru. While many people around the country were waiting in long lines to leave wishes in a well, some of the church decided to spend the day cleaning the church. This was a long overdue task that was made way easier by the joy and eagerness of those who came out to take care of the building the Lord provided us with. We organized, painted, cleaned, moved the stage, and even spent some time at the end of the day passing out flyers and sharing with anyone walking by who would stop to talk. The night ended with our Wednesday night service as we had a special movie night. We watched "I Am Not Ashamed", the story of Rachel who gave her life for Jesus during the Columbine school shooting several years ago. All in all it was a blessed time of fellowship, a time to reach out to the community, and a time to get some long needed work done.
