Meet the Writing Tutors

Jeff McAlpine (Writing Coordinator)

About me:

I have been teaching at Clackamas since 2003. I teach World Literature, WR 121, WR 122, and WR 227, Technical Report Writing. I enjoy working with students and helping them achieve their goals.

I like to run and hike and go backpacking with my family. I did a recent trip with my 16-year-old son to Boulder Lake in the Mt. Hood Wilderness.

Traveling is one of my favorite things. I like learning about other people from different cultures. I speak French and travel to France with my family every couple of years.

Favorite Part of Tutoring: I love the energy that comes from a tutoring session. I learn so much from my students during sessions and I try my best to give them the tools they need to feel confident in their abilities.

I love to help at all stages of the writing process, but brainstorming and planning an essay is my favorite part. Sitting down and doing a quick brainstorming session can open a lot of possibilities that otherwise were not available.

Favorite Part of Tutoring:

-Helping students realize they are good writers. Many people believe that to be good at an activity, they need to be effortlessly perfect, when that simply isn’t possible. I love hearing the original ideas and connections students make and helping them improve their communication skills through our collaboration.

Favorite Part of Tutoring:

Getting to meet new people is always a blast. Exposing myself to new ideas and lifestyle is really fascinating.

I also enjoy helping people and teaching people new things. If I can go to sleep knowing that I helped making someone’s life a little bit easier, then it was a good day.

Working through problems with students and coming to something that feels helpful on both ends is the most satisfying part of tutoring, I think.

Favorite Part of Tutoring:

I was a peer tutor in high school drama class, which involved some writing. My favorite part of it was seeing the excitement and relief my students felt when they finished the writing assignments that I had helped them with.
