Tutor & Student Responsibilities

Student Responsibilities

Tutors expect that students will…

  • Arrives on time and sign in and out for their appointment

  • Read and view class material ahead of time

  • Attempt homework or other assignments on your own before bringing it to a tutor for help

  • Have a plan for what you want to work on, and bring questions, relevant class notes, and/or instructor comments with you

  • Guide the conversation, letting the tutor know what you want to work on and engaging in discussion when the tutor asks questions

Tutor Responsibilities

Students can expect a tutor to…

  • Ask questions to help you clarify or connect ideas or brainstorm a direction

  • Help you organize, clarify, and/or develop your understanding ∙ Help build study skills

  • Encourage independence

  • Offer relevant resources to assist you

  • Celebrate your accomplishments

  • Offer relevant resources or examples

  • Focus on supporting student's educational process

Tutors cannot

  • ∙ "Proofread" or "check" assignments (though we are happy to support your self checking!)

  • ∙ Teach you material for the first time (student needs to attend class and come to tutoring sessions prepared)

  • ∙ Walk through each step of your homework (student needs to complete assignments independently)

Expectations

  • Tutoring is a supplement to your class, but it is never a replacement for attending class and utilizing your instructor's office hours.

  • You should not expect to finish your assignments during a tutoring session. Tutors can help you clarify concepts and get un-stuck, but cannot complete your assignments for you.
